Eight years in, and Conan Exiles just got its biggest update ever. On May 5, 2026, Funcom drops Conan Exiles Enhanced: a free Unreal Engine 5 upgrade that reworks the visuals from the ground up, merges the two main maps into one seamless world, and adds a list of quality-of-life changes long enough to make returning players do a double-take. And the price is zero. That part still catches people off guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is everything happening with Conan Exiles Enhanced, why it matters, and what you actually need to do before it goes live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Game That Refused to Die<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Conan Exiles launched on May 8, 2018. It dropped players into a harsh, cursed desert with nothing but their bare hands and a simple premise: survive, build, dominate. No hand-holding, no quest markers telling you where to go next. Just the brutal world of Conan the Barbarian and everything in it is trying to kill you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It found its audience fast. Over 15 million players have explored the Exiled Lands since launch. That number is nothing for a survival game that never had the marketing budget of a AAA title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Isle of Siptah expansion came out in 2020, adding a completely separate map with new biomes, new threats, and a different starting experience. The problem was that you had to pick one at character creation. Exiled Lands or Isle of Siptah. Not both. That was just how it worked, and for years, the community asked when that would change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May 5 is when it changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Conan Exiles Enhanced Actually Is<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Conan Exiles Enhanced is a free update, built in collaboration with Inflexion Games, the studio behind Nightingale. It upgrades the entire game from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5. New materials, new shaders, new rendering tech. The game targets 60+ FPS across Low, Medium, High, and Ultra settings on most PCs. Steam Deck support is also confirmed at launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visual jump is real. If you have watched the reveal trailer, you already know. The same desert that has been in the game for eight years looks genuinely different. Better lighting, better textures, less of the muddy, washed-out look that UE4 always struggled with at distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Funcom Chief Creative Officer Joel Bylos put it plainly: they could have sold this as a paid Enhanced Edition. Other studios have done exactly that. They chose not to. His words were that this is “an anniversary gift” to the playerbase, and he seems to mean it. The update is free for every existing owner of Conan Exiles on Steam, no strings attached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Merged Maps Are the Actual Big Deal<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is what most of the community has been talking about since the announcement, and for good reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first time, players who own the Isle of Siptah expansion can access both regions in the same session with the same character. You are no longer locked in at character creation. You pick where you want to go, you teleport there, and you come back when you feel like it. No restart, no separate character slots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On multiplayer servers, both maps exist simultaneously. One server can now run the full Exiled Lands and the full Isle of Siptah at the same time. That was not possible before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a catch. Isle of Siptah still requires ownership of the DLC. The merge does not make the expansion free. If you only own the base game, you stay in the Exiled Lands. If you own Siptah, you can now roam freely between both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Else Is Changing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The graphics and the map merge are the headlines, but the patch brings more than that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Multiple Characters Per Account<\/strong> \u2014 Single-player players can now maintain and switch between multiple characters without starting a new save over an existing one. Long-awaited, finally here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Revamped UI<\/strong> \u2014 The menus have been cleaned up, and navigation has been improved. Survival games are notorious for interfaces that feel designed by someone who hates the player. This is Funcom’s attempt to fix that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crafting From Nearby Storage<\/strong> \u2014 Crafting now pulls ingredients from nearby storage containers and follower inventories automatically. If you have spent time in Conan Exiles, you know exactly how much time this saves. Walking back and forth between chests and a crafting bench is a memory now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day-One Mod Support<\/strong> \u2014 Several popular mods are confirmed ready at launch. The Mod Dev Kit has also been refreshed. The modding community has always been one of Conan Exiles’ biggest strengths, and Funcom is not leaving that behind in the transition to UE5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reduced Client Size<\/strong> \u2014 The game client drops to around 40GB. That is smaller than the UE4 version. Compression and asset optimization are working as intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Console Situation (It Is Complicated)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Conan Exiles Enhanced is a Steam PC update. That is it, for now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xbox, PlayStation, Epic Games Store, and the Windows PC Store are all sitting this one out on May 5. Funcom says there are currently no plans to bring Enhanced to those platforms, but they are also not ruling it out. They have been somewhat quiet about the console side, and the community response has been frustration, which is fair, given that console players have been with the game for years and are being left on UE4 indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UE4 version, branded as Conan Exiles Legacy going forward, will still be accessible on Steam via the Game Versions & Betas menu. But Legacy gets no more major updates, no more Bazaar access, and no new content. Critical bug fixes only. Console players get the same deal \u2014 ongoing official servers, critical fixes, Bazaar access \u2014 but no Enhanced upgrade until something changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are a console player, Funcom acknowledges the frustration. They have not given a timeline. They have said they want to get there. Whether that means six months or two years is genuinely unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What You Need to Do Before May 5<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you play on official Exiled Lands servers on Steam, you mostly do not have to do anything. Your character, your base, your followers \u2014 all carry forward into UE5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you play on Isle of Siptah servers, you need to act before May 4 at 15:00 UTC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason: merging the Isle of Siptah into the Exiled Lands required changing the physical coordinates of the island. That means bases built on Siptah cannot be saved. They are gone after the update, regardless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Funcom’s recommended approach: dismantle your base before the cutoff and store all the materials in your followers’ inventories. Leave your clan beforehand and use the thrall and pet trading posts to transfer follower ownership to your individual character. Then, when the update hits, you get migrated to an Exiled Lands server with your character, followers, and inventory intact. You can teleport back to Siptah and rebuild from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you do nothing, your character still migrates. Level, progress, followers, and inventory carry over. Your base does not, and you will not have the materials back. The active prep option is clearly better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Single-player people on PC should back up their game database files before May 5. Funcom has detailed exactly which files and where in the FAQ. Do not skip this if your save means anything to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why This Is a Bigger Deal Than It Sounds<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Survival games age badly. It is almost a rule. The engine gets old, the graphics fall behind whatever was released last year, and the audience drifts. Funcom has been running Conan Exiles for eight years and apparently looked at that problem and decided to solve it for free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UE5 move on its own would be news. The map merge on its own would be news. Both in the same free update, on the game’s anniversary, while also fixing the crafting flow and cleaning up the UI \u2014 that is a lot to do at once and a lot to give away without charging for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inflexion Games CEO Aaryn Flynn described the Enhanced update as “a new foundation for the next decade of adventures.” That is probably the right way to think about it. This is not a goodbye patch. It is a reset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May 5 By Player Type<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You own Conan Exiles and play on PC:<\/strong> The update is free and automatic on Steam. Back up your files if you are in single-player or on a Siptah server. Otherwise, you are ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You own Conan Exiles on console or Epic\/Microsoft Store:<\/strong> You are staying on UE4 for now. Official servers and Bazaar access continue. No enhanced upgrade date has been announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have never played Conan Exiles:<\/strong> This is the best time to start. You get the full UE5 experience from the first session, and the game has eight years of content behind it. It is on Steam, and it is not expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You own Isle of Siptah and have a base there:<\/strong> Dismantle before May 4 at 15:00 UTC and store everything in your followers. That is the only way to keep your materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have been away for years and are thinking about returning:<\/strong> The Enhanced update is probably the best re-entry point the game has ever had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
