Feed it wood, it gets bouncy. Feed it magma, and it gets hot enough to leave a mark on you or others. Feed it TNT, and you can probably guess where that goes. Mojang first showed it off at Minecraft Live back in March, and reactions since then have ranged from “finally, something weird and fun” to “toxic gas caves in a kids’ game, sure, why not.”

Here’s what actually shipped, what’s still rough, and what people are doing with it.

From reveal to release

Mojang teased Chaos Cubed at Minecraft Live on March 21, calling it the first look at the next game drop. The reveal leaned hard on three things: glowing sulfur caves, a block-eating mob, and the promise that this update would feel different from the last few quiet content patches.

Snapshot testing started in May. Snapshot 26.2.6, on May 5, added two new ways a sulfur cube could behave – a slow, heavy version from stone and a “hot” version from magma – plus a new advancement for feeding one TNT. Snapshot 26.2.8 followed on May 19 and quietly flipped the default renderer from Vulkan to OpenGL, with Vulkan demoted to an experimental option. Beds also got a touch bouncier on both editions in that same snapshot, which is a strange detail to bury in a renderer patch, but here we are.

Mojang locked in the release date on May 30: June 16. The update shipped on schedule, Java and Bedrock together, no staggered rollout this time.

Meet the sulfur cube

The sulfur cube is the reason this update has the name it does. It’s a passive, blocky little slime that wanders sulfur caves doing basically nothing until you give it something to eat.

Feed it a block, and the cube absorbs it, goes still, and locks the block in place – you can shear it back out later if you change your mind, the same way you’d shear a sheep. What matters is what happens next. A wood-fed cube turns fast and bouncy. An ice-fed one slides instead of hops. A magma-fed cube glows and gets hot enough to damage you. And yes, TNT works too: it becomes a slow-moving bomb you still have to light yourself, which feels like either a great idea or a terrible one depending on who you’re playing with.

Feeding a cube TNT specifically unlocks an advancement called “Uh Oh,” which is Mojang’s way of admitting they know exactly what’s coming next.

A couple of extra details worth knowing: kill a sulfur cube and it splits into two smaller ones, the same way slimes and magma cubes do, and you can grow those back up with slimeballs (or, in a nice nod to the golden dandelion item from the earlier Tiny Takeover update, feed it one of those instead). You can also scoop up a full-size cube with an empty bucket and carry it wherever you want. Redstone players have already started talking about cube-powered minigames, and apparently, “sulfur cube soccer” is a real thing people are building.

Sulfur caves, springs, and the occasional geyser

Sulfur caves are the new underground biome where all of this lives. They’re lit by glowing yellow sulfur and deep red cinnabar, with greenish pools of sulfuric water scattered through them. Get too close to a pool and the gas it gives off hits you with Nausea, so it’s not exactly a relaxing place to dig. Sharp sulfur spikes hang from the ceilings and grow up from the floor, and despite some earlier talk that they’d be harmless, the finished version will hurt you if one falls on you or you fall onto one. Cave spiders also spawn here naturally for the first time outside of spawners, which is a small but mean touch.

Above ground, sulfur springs mark where a cave runs close to the surface. They show up as bubbling pools that turn into full geysers if magma happens to be sitting underneath the water. Step into one at the wrong moment and you’ll get launched skyward in a burst of steam. There was a bug early on where hovering on a geyser too long caused double fall damage on the way back down – that got caught and fixed before launch.

New blocks, mostly for looks

Sulfur and cinnabar each come with a full stone-style block set: solid, polished, bricks, slabs, stairs, walls, the whole lineup. They’re genuinely good colors to build with, a bright yellow and a deep brick red that nothing else in the game quite matches. The catch, and it’s the single biggest complaint about this update so far, is that neither block does anything beyond decoration. No tool, no crafting use, nothing. One block does have an actual job: potent sulfur, the green block that forms in the pools, which is what produces the gas and triggers the geysers when it ends up under magma.

A new tune for the caves

There’s a new music disc called “Bounce,” found in mineshaft chests wherever a mineshaft happens to cross paths with a sulfur cave. Five other ambient tracks (Ebb, Home, Pan, Young, Beach), all from the same composer, Fingerspit, were added too, and mostly play in the background while you explore. There’s a known bug right now where the Bounce disc won’t generate if the experimental Villager Trade Rebalance feature is switched on – it’s been logged and is expected to get sorted in a later patch.

Parties, friends, and a quieter renderer swap

Bedrock picked up a Parties system, letting players group up to 14 friends across different worlds with shared chat, no need to all be crammed into the same save. Java doesn’t have anything like it yet. Both editions got an upgraded, cross-platform Friends List tied into Xbox and Microsoft accounts. Realms now support up to 10 players outside of Parties, up from 8.

On the more technical side, OpenGL is now the default renderer instead of Vulkan, though Vulkan is still sitting there as an experimental option for anyone who wants to poke at it.

What’s still rough

Nothing game-breaking made it to launch. The worst bugs got caught in snapshots before release – a looping damage sound when a cube touched cactus, the double fall damage on geysers, that sort of thing. The Bounce disc issue mentioned above is really the only notable thing still open.

Server owners should still be careful before updating. Old, already-generated chunks won’t retroactively grow sulfur caves, so a long-running world might not see much of the new biome unless players push out into fresh terrain. Anyone running plugins or datapacks keeps getting told the same thing: test before flipping the switch on a live server. The data pack version also bumped up, so older custom content may need a look before it works again.

What the community is actually saying

The reaction has been a genuine mix, which honestly feels right for an update this weird. A lot of players are glad Mojang tried something off-beat instead of another quiet content patch – there’s a real sense of relief in a lot of the discussion, like people were tired of updates that felt like a spreadsheet of new variants. Redstone builders and minigame creators seem like the happiest group right now, and it’s not hard to see why once you’ve watched a TNT-fed cube go off.

The criticism mostly lands in one place: sulfur and cinnabar look great and do nothing. The most common fix people keep suggesting is some kind of sulfur powder item that could feed into gunpowder or fertilizer recipes, just something to give the material a reason to exist beyond a build palette. A few people have also joked about the toxic, gas-and-pools theme showing up in a game this many kids play, more as a punchline than an actual complaint.

Then there’s the meme side of it. “Chaos Cubed? More like Slop Squared” spread fast, alongside clips of bouncing cubes and players getting launched off geysers, usually set to the new disc. Reddit is already full of seed lists for giant surface-level sulfur caves, for anyone who’d rather not dig to find one.

Should you bother updating?

If you build: grab the new block sets for the colors alone, even without a functional use yet.

If you’re into redstone or minigames: this update was basically made for you. Swapping a cube’s behavior on the fly is the most flexible new toy Minecraft has handed builders in a while.

If you run a server: back up first, and actually check your datapack and plugin list before pushing this live. It’s a smaller patch, but smaller doesn’t mean nothing breaks.

If you’re waiting for sulfur to do something useful: so is everyone else. That’s probably a problem for a future patch, not this one.

Worth knowing for context: Chaos Cubed is the second of three major Minecraft drops planned for 2026. Tiny Takeover, earlier in the year, brought baby mob mechanics and the golden dandelion. The next one, the Dappled Forest, is an autumn-themed biome update due this fall, and it’s shaping up to be the calm, pretty counterpart to all this chaos.

Summary

Chaos Cubed was released on June 16, 2026, for Java (26.2) and Bedrock (26.30), free for all existing players on every platform.

The sulfur cube is a new passive mob that absorbs blocks and changes its speed, bounciness, and danger level based on what it eats. Wood, ice, magma, and TNT all produce different results. Cubes split when killed and can be bucketed for transport.

Sulfur caves are a new underground biome with sulfur and cinnabar blocks, sulfur spikes that deal fall damage, and noxious sulfur pools that cause Nausea. Sulfur springs on the surface can form geysers when magma sits beneath the water.

New sulfur and cinnabar block sets are decorative only, the update’s biggest community complaint. A new music disc, “Bounce,” and five ambient tracks were added by composer Fingerspit.

Bedrock added a Parties system for grouping up to 14 players across worlds. Both editions got a cross-platform Friends List. OpenGL replaced Vulkan as the default renderer.

Server admins should back up worlds and check plugin and datapack compatibility before updating, since old chunks won’t generate new sulfur caves.

The next major Minecraft drop, the Dappled Forest, arrives this fall.

Happy bouncing!

Minecraft just shipped one of its strangest updates in years, and it did it on purpose.
