Valheim sold a million copies in eight days. It hit five million within a month. As of the most recent count from parent company Embracer Group, it’s past 12 million copies sold, still sitting at roughly 94% Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam across more than 250,000 reviews, and still pulling in 20,000-plus daily players nearly five years after launch. On September 9, 2026, all of that officially stops being “Early Access.”

The Long Wait

Valheim launched into Steam Early Access on February 2, 2021, at $19.99, built by Iron Gate AB and published by Coffee Stain. Founder Richard Svensson started it essentially alone before the team grew to five, then grew a lot more once the sales numbers came in. What followed was one of the more patient Early Access rollouts in recent memory: Hearth & Home in September 2021 reworked building and cooking, Mistlands landed in December 2022 with magic staffs and the Queen boss, Ashlands arrived in 2024 as a volcanic wasteland (and quietly moved the whole engine onto Unity’s Asset Bundle system to cut memory usage), and the Call to Arms patches through 2025 and into 2026 rebalanced combat, stamina, and parries. No live service systems, no battle pass, no paid DLC. The base price never moved in five years.

What also never arrived, for most of that stretch, was the Deep North: the eighth and final biome, promised since roughly forever, and the subject of enough “any news on the frozen area” forum posts to become its own running joke. Iron Gate didn’t exactly help. A five-year-anniversary post joked about “early axes.” A “Word from the Devs” blog in mid-2025 revealed a new enemy called the Elaking and teased a combat overhaul aimed at fighting on slopes, then offered no date for either. Around the same time, another dev diary tried to sell drawbridges and a meatball recipe as headline features. Readers who’d been waiting years for the actual ending were not amused.

The Reveal

Then, on June 7, 2026, at the PC Gaming Show, Iron Gate finally said the word fans had been asking for since 2021: a date. Valheim 1.0 launches September 9, 2026. The studio’s own announcement post was almost comically short, just a thank-you for the patience and a promise of “new enemies to kill, bases to build and weapons to craft.” A reveal trailer went up the same day, followed shortly by a hands-on preview period for press.

For a franchise that had spent the better part of a year drip-feeding vague teasers, an actual release date landed like a small earthquake. It’s also, notably, the first time Valheim has announced a full release date at all. Every previous biome update simply arrived whenever it arrived.

What’s Actually in the Deep North

The headline addition is the Deep North itself: a snow-and-ice biome generating at the far northern edge of every world, past the Ashlands and Mistlands in the progression order. It looks deceptively calm on arrival, with quiet snowfields and frozen lakes you can skate across, before turning into one of the harder regions in the game. Abandoned Viking villages, icy mesas, and half-buried castles dot the landscape, along with northern lights that Iron Gate has clearly put real art effort into.

Three enemy types are confirmed so far. Gammeltrolls are ancient trolls that migrated north as they aged and effectively fused with the terrain, and they’re not even bosses, just very large regular enemies capable of hurling entire tree trunks at your base. Kill one, and it turns to solid rock and stone; the old pickaxe method doesn’t work anymore, so harvesting the corpse means tossing Ember Charges at it until it breaks apart. Underground, the Elakingar are horned, rodent-like burrowers that dug an entire tunnel network through the region and, according to the game’s lore, already wiped out an earlier wave of Viking settlers who tried building there. A third enemy type, described in early footage as Viking ghosts, is tied directly to the biome’s boss fight, whose identity Iron Gate is keeping quiet. Creative director Robin Eyre has hinted that anyone guessing the final boss off the marketing so far is probably wrong.

Two dungeon types round out the biome: Winding Tunnels, disorienting underground corridor mazes that are the Elakingars’ home turf, and the Gates of Mokhalla, larger tower structures with more deliberate room layouts. New gear includes three armor tiers (light, heavy, and a mage-focused set), Nord-style axes and greatswords, bows, a heavy Frostfire crossbow, and a large round shield.

The single addition getting the most attention, by a wide margin, is the grappling hook. It has unlimited uses, fires into terrain or structures, and lets you swing freely once attached, which is the kind of traversal option Valheim players have wanted since the first time they fell off a Black Forest cliff back in 2021. It’s tied to Mistlands progression rather than the Deep North itself, so anyone who clears the Mistlands boss and finishes the research at the Galdr Table can be carrying one before they ever set foot in the snow.

The Rest of 1.0

Deep North isn’t the entirety of what’s shipping. Iron Gate has confirmed more than 50 Steam achievements, though tracking only starts once the update goes live, so nobody’s getting retroactive credit for the 40-odd times they’ve already killed Eikthyr. There’s also a batch of engine-level optimization work aimed at cutting the microstutter that happens when zones load in and out of memory, plus faster saving. Old worlds and characters carry over without issue, though Iron Gate is recommending fresh starts, since new biome generation only works properly in areas nobody’s explored yet.

Platforms, Price, and a Real Tradeoff

September 9 is also when Valheim stops being PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox only. PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 join the lineup on day one, with full crossplay across every platform, PC included. It’s the game’s biggest console expansion since the original Xbox release, and this time it happens all at once rather than trickling out over the following year.

The price is going up too, from $19.99 to $29.99, the first change since the 2021 launch. Anyone who already owns the game gets the update free; this is purely about what new buyers pay starting in September. Iron Gate has framed it as the natural cost of graduating from an evolving Early Access project into a finished one, though the Steam Summer Sale currently has the game down at $10, which is about as cheap as it’s ever likely to get again.

There’s one real catch buried inside the crossplay system. Valheim’s PC mod scene runs almost entirely on BepInEx, and BepInEx hooks into Steam’s networking layer. Crossplay runs on a different backend entirely, Microsoft’s PlayFab, and the two don’t coexist: turn crossplay on and BepInEx mods stop loading, no workaround. For an all-Steam friend group, that’s a non-issue; just leave crossplay off. For anyone hoping to bring in a Game Pass or console friend while keeping their favorite mods, September 9 forces an actual choice.

What’s Still Not Here

The Ocean biome. This is the one actually generating friction. Valheim’s oceans have been thin since 2021, mostly empty water connecting landmasses with a Serpent as the only real threat, and an ocean overhaul sat on Iron Gate’s public roadmap for years. The 1.0 FAQ, published July 1, ended the speculation directly: no ocean rework is coming with this release. The official line is that the ocean mainly functions as a route between biomes rather than a biome in its own right, so it isn’t getting the Deep North treatment.

What happens after 1.0 is also an open question. Iron Gate has committed to continued bug fixes and quality-of-life patches, but on new content, the studio’s actual answer was that it’s too soon to say. For a game that’s kept a steady biome-a-year cadence for five years, “we don’t know” is a genuinely different tone than fans are used to hearing from this particular studio.

What Previewers Actually Thought

PCGamesN got a guided tour of the Deep North ahead of the announcement, joining producer Sara Uvalic and Robin Eyre for a hands-on run through the biome. The visual pitch landed clean: after the grim, scorched Ashlands, the Deep North reads as something closer to a postcard mix of snow, ice, and forest, right up until a Gammeltroll starts flattening a nearby village and the group has to fight it off with a loadout the devs admitted was a little overpowered for demo purposes. The grappling hook got tested on a tower climb during the same session and came away as the previewer’s favorite new addition. The general takeaway across outlets that got early access has been consistent: the biome looks like a genuine send-off rather than a content patch stretched thin, even if nobody’s come away with real detail on the final boss yet.

How the Community Is Taking It

Reaction has split cleanly along two lines. One side is just relieved to finally have a date after years of vague teasers, and treats the price increase as a fair toll for five years of free content. The other side is stuck on the ocean decision specifically, since it sat on the original roadmap, and its absence, combined with Iron Gate’s vagueness about anything past 1.0, reads to some players as the studio quietly closing the book on the game’s biggest structural gap. Neither reaction is unreasonable. The overall Steam sentiment hasn’t moved, though; it’s still comfortably in Overwhelmingly Positive territory, and most of the noise is happening in comment sections rather than review scores.

September 9 by Player Type

Already deep into a save: Back up your world before updating regardless of what Iron Gate says about compatibility, and if you’ve got unused Mistlands progress sitting around, finish the Galdr Table research now so the grappling hook is already in your inventory on day one.

Never played it, waiting for it to feel finished: This is a genuinely reasonable time to start. You’re buying in at the tail end of a Summer Sale price before the permanent increase, and you get the full arc from Meadows to Deep North without any of the “wait for the next update” waiting the rest of us did.

Running a modded server with mixed platforms: Decide now whether crossplay or BepInEx matters more to your group, because September 9 doesn’t let you have both.

Mainly here for the ocean: No news is the news. It’s not in 1.0, and there’s no indication it’s coming later either.

New to Valheim through PS5 or Switch 2: You’re getting the entire finished game on day one, with full crossplay to reach anyone already playing elsewhere. There’s no console-specific catching up this time.

Summary

Valheim 1.0 launches September 9, 2026, on PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2, with full crossplay across every platform and a price increase from $19.99 to $29.99.

The headline content is the Deep North, the game’s eighth and final biome: a frozen region with Gammeltrolls, underground Elakingar, two new dungeon types, three new armor tiers, Nord weapons, a Frostfire crossbow, and an unlimited-use grappling hook that unlocks through Mistlands progression. The final boss remains unrevealed. Engine optimizations, 50-plus Steam achievements, and full crossplay round out the update.

Not included: any rework of the Ocean biome, which Iron Gate has ruled out directly, along with any real commitment about what content, if any, follows 1.0. Early hands-on previews have been positive on the Deep North’s look and feel. Community reaction is split between relief that a release date finally exists and frustration over the ocean decision, though Steam sentiment remains solidly Overwhelmingly Positive heading into launch.

Happy surviving!

Five and a half years ago, a five-person team in Skövde, Sweden, put out an
