That changed on 9 September 2026. The 1.0 update filled it in, added Kall Fimbulbringer as the eighth and final Forsaken, and dropped more than forty new weapons on top of the Ashlands gear you spent last year grinding for.

Which is a problem, because forty weapons is a lot of Bloodgold to waste on the wrong one. Nord weapons aren’t cheap. Every single one needs a mould you have to find, a cast you have to make, and a hardening step at a station you have to build first. Pick badly and you’ve burned an evening of troll farming on a weapon that gets resisted by the boss you were building it for.

This list covers the five weapons actually worth committing materials to in 1.0, what they cost, and where each one falls apart. Kall’s resistances do a lot of the sorting for you, so we’ll get to those too.

What Makes a Weapon Worth Crafting in 1.0

The list is shorter than the weapon roster suggests, because most of the forty new weapons are the same twelve types wearing different elements.

Damage type beats damage number. This has always been true in Valheim and 1.0 makes it brutal. Kall Fimbulbringer resists pierce, fire, frost and lightning, and is outright immune to spirit. That single line invalidates most of the flashiest gear in the update. Blunt and slash are what get through.

The crafting chain, not just the recipe. Nord weapons use a three-stage process. You find a mould, combine it with materials at a Black Forge to produce a cast, then harden that cast at a Frost Foundry. The mould is consumed. Finding the item does not mean you can equip it, and plenty of people have sat on an unfinished cast wondering why it won’t go in their hotbar.

Your weapon skill level. A level 60 club out-damages a freshly cast Nord Greatsword you’ve never swung before. Skill runs 0 to 100 and adds damage the whole way, so crafting a weapon in a class you’ve never touched is a downgrade for the first few hours. Craft in the class you already main unless you have a specific reason not to.

Moveset and stamina. Raw damage on a paper stat sheet assumes every swing lands. The Nord Sledge has one attack, a 28 stamina overhead, and drops your movement speed by 20%. That’s fine when you’re patient and awful when a pack of Barka is circling you.

Nice to have: an elemental variant you can afford. Thunderblood and Frostfire are enchantments applied to a finished Nord weapon, not separate crafts, so you’re always paying for the base weapon first regardless.

Damage Comparison

Weapon

Base Damage

Class

Best For

Nord Sledge

225 Blunt

Two-handed club

Best overall, bypasses every Kall resistance

Nord Greatsword

210 Slash

Two-handed sword

Highest raw slash, reach, sword mains

Thunderblood Crossbow

264 Pierce + 45 Lightning

Crossbow

Best ranged damage per shot

Lightning Strike

300 Lightning

Elemental staff

Highest single number in the game, mage builds

Frostner

35 Blunt + 40 Frost + 20 Spirit

One-handed club

Crowd control, and you probably already have it

1. Nord Sledge

Cast at Black Forge (level 4), hardened at Frost Foundry. 20 Bloodgold, 10 Timberwood, Mould: Nord Sledge.

The Sledge is the answer to the question 1.0 actually asks you, which is “what do I hit the final boss with.” Kall resists four of the five elemental types and is immune to a fifth. Blunt walks straight past all of it, and 225 base blunt is the highest raw damage on any weapon in the game that isn’t a staff.

It has exactly one attack. A wide overhead swing that hits everything within about two metres in a 90 degree arc, with no damage penalty for multiple targets and double stagger. There’s no combo chain to learn. You wind up, you swing, everything in front of you falls over. In a tight tunnel or an ambush it’s the most satisfying weapon in the update.

Enchanted into the Thunderblood Sledge it picks up 45 lightning and, more importantly, a passive that adds 0.2% damage per point of health you’re missing. The fight gets worse for you and better for the Sledge at the same time, which is exactly the scaling you want in a long boss encounter.

Pros:

Highest base physical damage in the game at 225 blunt

Blunt bypasses every one of Kall Fimbulbringer’s resistances

Single swing hits every enemy in the arc with no falloff

Double stagger knocks down most things it connects with

Thunderblood variant scales up as your health drops

Upgrades to 255 blunt and 400 durability at Quality 4

Cons:

20% movement speed penalty, the harshest on this list

28 stamina per swing with a long wind-up, so a missed swing is punishing

No attack chain and no secondary, which makes it monotonous over a long session

Timberwood is a separate gathering job on top of the Bloodgold grind

If you only craft one Nord weapon, make it this one. It’s the correct answer for the final boss, it’s the correct answer for a corridor full of adds, and the Thunderblood upgrade turns it into the strongest weapon in Valheim. Just don’t expect to outrun anything while it’s equipped.

2. Nord Greatsword

Cast at Black Forge (level 4), hardened at Frost Foundry. 20 Bloodgold, 2 Frozen Branch, Mould: Nord Greatsword.

If you’ve spent the whole run levelling Swords, the Greatsword is your Sledge. 210 slash isn’t quite the Sledge’s 225, but slash is the other damage type Kall doesn’t resist, and the Greatsword gets there with a moveset that’s much easier to live with.

The three-swing chain doubles the damage on the last hit, and the secondary is a wide sweep with a three metre reach that does triple damage. That reach matters more than the stat line suggests in the Deep North, where a lot of what’s attacking you is large and hits from further away than you’d like. Block value is 76, the highest of any weapon here, and the movement penalty is 5% instead of 20%.

Upgraded to Quality 4 it hits 240 slash. Fed a Thunderblood Essence it becomes the Thunderblood Greatsword at 220 slash and 45 lightning, though the lightning is dead weight against Kall specifically, so there’s a real argument for leaving a Greatsword unenchanted if the boss is what you built it for.

Pros:

210 slash base, 240 at Quality 4

Slash is unresisted by the final boss

Long reach, 2.6m on the primary and 3.0m on the secondary sweep

76 block, the highest on this list

Three-hit chain with a doubled final hit, so it feels good to actually use

Only a 5% movement penalty

Cons:

Two-handed, so no shield

20 stamina per swing and slow recovery animations

Frozen Branches are a separate Deep North scavenging run

The Thunderblood enchantment adds damage your final boss resists

The Greatsword is the weapon to build if you want one thing that handles exploration, dungeons and the boss without swapping. It gives up a little damage against the Sledge and gets back reach, blocking and a moveset you won’t get bored of.

3. Thunderblood Crossbow

Nord Crossbow cast at Black Forge, then enchanted at Black Forge (level 4) with 20 Bloodgold and 1 Thunderblood Essence.

264 pierce plus 45 lightning per bolt, with a 25% chance to proc chain lightning on hit. Nothing else in Valheim puts that much damage into a single button press from across a room. For opening a fight, thinning out a group before they close, or removing one dangerous thing from a pack of otherwise manageable things, the Thunderblood Crossbow has no competition.

The reload is 3.5 seconds and you will feel every one of them. This is not a weapon you fire twice in a row while something is running at you. It’s a first shot, then a swap, and if you haven’t planned for the swap you’re reloading with a Jotun in your face.

It’s also the clearest example of why damage type matters more than the number on the tooltip. Kall resists pierce. That 264 gets cut down hard in the one fight the whole update builds toward, so the crossbow is an exploration and clearing weapon that you deliberately leave in a chest before the final boss.

Pros:

Highest single-shot damage in the game

25% chain lightning proc adds effective damage against groups

Costs no stamina to fire

Pierce gets full armour penetration against most enemies

Only a 5% movement penalty

Cons:

3.5 second reload makes it unusable as a primary weapon in close quarters

Kall Fimbulbringer resists pierce, so you swap off it for the final fight

Crossbows are their own skill, so it starts weak if you’ve been a bow main

Needs a finished Nord Crossbow before you can even start the enchantment

Bloodgold Bolts are another draw on your Timberwood stock

Craft this for the trip, not the boss. It makes Deep North exploration dramatically safer, and then you put it away for twenty minutes at the end.

4. Lightning Strike

Cast at Galdr Table (level 3), then frost hardened. 10 Bloodgold, 5 Nornathread, 1 Thunderblood Essence, Mould: Lightning Strike.

300 lightning damage is the biggest number attached to any weapon in Valheim 1.0, and Lightning Strike is one of four genuinely new magic weapons in the update rather than an elemental reskin of a Nord staff. It’s an Elemental Magic weapon, it costs 40 Eitr per cast, and it fires a single bolt with heavy knockback.

The catch is that a big number on a tooltip and sustained damage output are different things. One bolt every 40 Eitr is not the same as a weapon you swing continuously, and your Eitr pool is finite and food-dependent in a way stamina isn’t. Against something with a large health bar you’ll run dry before a melee player runs out of stamina.

Lightning is also on Kall’s resistance list, which makes the most expensive-feeling weapon in the update a poor choice for the fight it’s tiered for. It’s excellent everywhere else in the biome, particularly against anything you’d rather stagger at range than let reach you.

Pros:

300 lightning, the highest single-hit figure in the game

Runs on Eitr rather than stamina, so it pairs with a full mage build

Very light at 0.3 weight

48 block while held and 400 durability

Heavy knockback interrupts most things it connects with

Cons:

Kall resists lightning, which undercuts it in the endgame’s main fight

40 Eitr per cast drains your pool fast

Requires a Galdr Table at level 3 plus a full Eitr food setup

No secondary attack and no parry

Nornathread is another material entirely separate from the Bloodgold chain

If you’re already running an Eitr build, Lightning Strike is the obvious pickup and it will delete most of the biome. If you’re a melee player looking at that 300 and wondering whether to pivot, the answer is no.

5. Frostner

Forge (level 3). 10 Ancient Bark, 30 Silver, 5 Ymir Flesh, 5 Freeze Gland.

Frostner is a Mountain-tier silver mace from four biomes ago and it’s still on best-weapon lists in 1.0, which tells you most of what you need to know. 35 blunt, 40 frost and 20 spirit means it hits three different weaknesses at once, and almost everything in Valheim is weak to at least one of them.

The frost component slows whatever survives the hit, which is the best crowd control in the game and the reason Frostner stays in people’s inventories long after the raw numbers stop being competitive. Spirit damage punishes undead, and blunt covers the skeletons and blobs that resist everything else. It also keeps your shield hand free, which no other weapon on this list does.

Materials are all pre-Mountain: Ancient Bark from Swamp trees, Silver from Mountain veins, Freeze Glands from Drakes, and Ymir Flesh bought from Haldor at 120 coins each. Upgrading runs through Forge levels 4 to 6 on Silver alone, taking it to 58 frost and 350 durability at Quality 4.

Pros:

Three damage types at once, so it rarely hits a resistance

Frost slow is the strongest crowd control available

One-handed, so you keep a shield

Spirit damage makes undead-heavy areas much safer

Costs nothing you can’t farm well before the Deep North

Upgrades to 58 frost and 350 durability on Silver alone

Cons:

35 base blunt is nowhere near Nord-tier single-target damage

Frost is resisted by Kall Fimbulbringer, leaving only the blunt component

Ymir Flesh is purchase-only, so you need coins and a Haldor location

Wolves and Drakes resist frost, which blunts it in exactly the biome it comes from

Frostner isn’t here to compete with Bloodgold gear on damage. It’s here because it’s the weapon you carry in your second slot for the entire game, and 1.0 didn’t change that.

Nord vs. Frostfire vs. Thunderblood

Every Nord weapon has two elemental variants, and the choice isn’t as simple as adding the numbers up.

Nord is the base tier, crafted from Bloodgold at the Frost Foundry. Full physical damage, no elemental component, nothing resisted by a boss with a long resistance list.

Thunderblood adds 45 lightning, a 25% chain lightning proc, and a passive that adds 0.2% damage per missing health point. It mostly preserves the base physical damage, which is why it’s the default pick for almost everything.

Frostfire adds 88 frost and 12 fire but cuts roughly 30 to 40 points off the physical base. The totals look bigger. The physical damage that actually lands when something resists frost is smaller. It’s situationally good against groups where the frost slow earns its keep, and worse the rest of the time.

Essences for both come from ghosts summoned at Memorial Place altars. You place Memorial Coals, kill what appears, and collect roughly one Essence per two summons. Keep the coals. They look like furnace fuel and people burn them.

One more thing worth knowing before you spend anything: Bloodgold is smelted from Petrified Tissue, which drops from the Gammeltrolls wandering the biome. It’s not an ore vein. Bring a weapon you can already fight with, because you need to kill trolls before you can craft anything that kills trolls comfortably.

Conclusion

The Nord Sledge is the pick for most people. 225 blunt, an area swing that ignores target count, and a damage type the final boss can’t resist makes it the one weapon that’s correct in both the dungeon and the arena. The Thunderblood upgrade only widens the gap.

The rest earn their places for narrower reasons. The Nord Greatsword is what sword mains should build, and the reach and block value make it the better general-purpose weapon even at slightly lower damage. The Thunderblood Crossbow makes exploring the Deep North far less dangerous, as long as you accept that you’re swapping off it for Kall. Lightning Strike is for players already committed to an Eitr build and nobody else. Frostner is the one you already have, and it stays in your inventory regardless of what else you craft.

Whatever you build, check the resistance list before you spend the Bloodgold rather than after. Valheim has always cared more about what damage type you brought than how expensive it was, and 1.0 leans on that harder than any biome before it.

Happy
