A maxed weapon means nothing if a Fuling combo takes half your health bar before you land a hit back, and the Deep North raises the stakes further. Kall Fimbulbringer, the final boss added in the 1.0 launch, hits hard in every phase and layers fire and frost damage on top of the physical.

The problem with 1.0 specifically is that “wear the Deep North stuff” isn’t automatically the right call anymore. The update added four new armor sets, and they’re built for different jobs rather than one obvious upgrade path. A heavy tank set, a mobility set, and a mage set now sit next to each other at the same tier, and picking the wrong one for your build wastes a pile of Bloodgold you could have spent on a weapon instead.

This list ranks the five best armor sets across the whole game as of 1.0, not just the new Deep North gear, because two of the strongest options still come from the Ashlands and Mistlands.

What to Look For in Endgame Armor

Total armor rating. This is still the number that matters most. Every craftable piece gains armor per upgrade level, so compare sets at their maximum quality rather than the base stat you see the moment you unlock the recipe. A fresh higher-tier set can lose to a fully upgraded lower-tier one.

Resistances over raw numbers, once you’re past a certain point. Armor reduces physical damage. It does nothing for fire, frost, poison, or lightning on its own, those are handled separately by capes, food, and set bonuses. A 132-armor set with no fire resistance can still cook you in the Ashlands. Match your resistance to the biome you’re actually fighting in.

Set bonuses. The Deep North introduced armor with shared bonuses that only activate when you wear all three pieces. These can be worth more than the raw armor difference, especially anything touching stamina, since stamina management is what actually kills you in a long fight.

Weight and mobility. Heavy armor slows you down. That’s fine for a shield-and-mace tank and a real liability for a build that depends on dodging. Check the movement penalty before committing, not after you’re already stuck outrunning nothing.

Nice to have: a crafting chain you’re not already burned out on. The three newest Deep North sets all run through the mould, cast, and Frost Foundry pipeline, which means finding a mould in the Winding Tunnels before you can even start the recipe.

Comparison Table

Armor Set

Biome

Max Armor

Class

Best For

Protector

Deep North

132

Heavy

Maximum raw defense, melee tanking

Flametal

Ashlands

126

Heavy

Fire-resistant tanking through the lava fields

Carapace

Mistlands

114

Heavy

Strongest pre-Ashlands defense

Vanguard

Deep North

102

Hybrid

Mobile melee and ranged, stamina-heavy builds

Ask

Ashlands

96

Light

Stamina-efficient ranged and dodge builds

1. Protector Armor

Frost Foundry. Breastplate, Trousers, and Helmet of the Protector, cast from Bloodgold plus Moose Hides and Leather Straps.

Protector is the new ceiling. Each piece carries 44 base armor, the highest per-piece value in the game, for a total of 132 when the full set is equipped. The Breastplate also carries Frost Resistance built in, which matters more than it sounds like in a biome that’s actively trying to freeze you.

There’s no set bonus chasing the armor number here. Protector is a pure tank set: wear it, block, and let the rating do the work. That simplicity is the appeal. You don’t need to learn a rotation of bonuses to get value out of it, you just need to survive long enough for the number to matter.

The tradeoff is weight. This is the heaviest armor in the game, on par with Flametal, and it drags down your movement and dodge speed accordingly. Blocking with a shield costs more stamina in Protector than in anything lighter, so pair it with a weapon and a playstyle that expects you to plant your feet rather than dance around.

Pros:

Highest per-piece and total armor rating in the game at 132

Breastplate gives built-in Frost Resistance, useful throughout the Deep North

No rotation or positioning required to get value, the armor rating just applies

Repairable at the Frost Foundry like the rest of the Nord gear line

Strong first pick for anyone building a shield-and-weapon melee tank

Cons:

Heaviest set in the game, with a real hit to movement and dodge speed

Blocking drains stamina faster than in lighter alternatives

No frost resistance on the legs or helmet, only the chest

Requires finding a mould in the Winding Tunnels before you can craft anything

No set bonus, so all the value is in the flat number

If your build is shield, weapon, and standing your ground, Protector is the correct answer and there’s not much debate about it. If you fight at range or lean on dodging, look further down this list first.

2. Flametal Armor

Black Forge. Flametal Breastplate, Greaves, and Helmet, forged from Flametal ore mined across the Ashlands’ lava fields.

Flametal was the top armor in the game before the Deep North existed, and it’s still close behind Protector at roughly 126 total armor at the highest quality most players can reach. What sets it apart isn’t the number, it’s the built-in heat resistance: the Breastplate and Greaves each provide roughly 20% resistance, stacking to around 40% together. That’s the difference between surviving a walk across open lava ground and not.

Getting the ore in the first place is its own fight. Flametal deposits sit inside lava pools on the backs of creatures that submerge the moment you start mining, so you’re on a timer every time you go for a haul. You’ll need either a tamed Asksvin to ride across the lava or a stack of Basalt Bombs to throw down temporary platforms.

No set bonus here either, same as Protector. It’s raw defense plus a resistance tailored to the biome it comes from, which is exactly what you want when the ground itself is trying to kill you.

Pros:

Roughly 126 total armor, second only to Protector

Built-in heat resistance from the Breastplate and Greaves, stacking to around 40%

Genuinely necessary for surviving extended time near open lava

Still viable gear to carry into the early Deep North before Bloodgold starts flowing

The set you’ll likely still be wearing by the time you finish the Ashlands

Cons:

Mining the ore means crossing lava repeatedly, which is dangerous on its own

No frost resistance, so you need a separate cape once you reach the Deep North

Heavy set, similar movement penalty to Protector

No stamina or damage bonuses, purely a defensive pick

Requires a tamed Asksvin or a steady Basalt Bomb supply just to gather the material

Flametal earns its spot for exactly one reason: it’s the armor that lets you function in the Ashlands at all. If you’re heading into that biome, this isn’t really optional.

3. Carapace Armor

Black Forge or high-level Forge. Carapace Helmet, Breastplate, and Greaves, built from Carapace, Scale Hide, and Refined Eitr.

Carapace was the best armor in the game for years before the Ashlands and Deep North existed, and it still holds up. Fully upgraded, the set reaches 114 total armor, well ahead of anything from the Plains or earlier and enough to carry you through the Mistlands’ Queen fight and into the early Ashlands while you’re still farming Flametal.

The materials come almost entirely from the Mistlands itself. Carapace and Mandibles drop from Seekers and Seeker Soldiers, Scale Hide comes from the biome’s Hares, and Refined Eitr has to be produced separately at an Eitr Refinery from Sap and Soft Tissue. None of it is available before you’re already deep into the biome, which is fitting for a set that’s meant to be your answer to it.

It carries no elemental resistance and no set bonus, same shape as Flametal. What it has is a straightforward armor number that beats everything below it, and a movement penalty in line with other heavy sets rather than anything worse.

Pros:

114 total armor at max upgrade, the strongest pre-Ashlands set

Materials all come from within the Mistlands, so no backtracking to earlier biomes

Solid bridge set into the early Ashlands while Flametal gear is still being farmed

Movement penalty is standard for a heavy set, nothing extreme

A fully upgraded set here still beats a freshly crafted Flametal or Ask piece

Cons:

No elemental resistance of any kind

No set bonus

Refined Eitr requires its own crafting chain through an Eitr Refinery

Outclassed once you have the materials for Flametal or Protector

Farming Seekers for Mandibles and Carapace can be slow solo

Carapace is the set you build because you’re in the Mistlands and need to survive it, not because you’re planning to wear it forever. It does that job well and keeps doing it a while into the next biome.

4. Vanguard Armor

Frost Foundry. Hood, Chestpiece, and Trousers of the Vanguard, cast from Bloodgold, Elaking Hair Bundle, Moose Hides, and Moose Sinew.

Vanguard trades armor for utility, and the trade is a good one if your build actually uses what it offers. Each piece carries 34 armor for a total of 102, noticeably below Protector, but wearing the complete set activates a bonus that cuts running stamina cost by 10%, boosts health and stamina regeneration by 10% each, cuts dodge stamina cost by 20%, and adds 10% Pierce damage.

That combination is built for anyone whose combat style depends on staying mobile rather than standing and blocking. A spear or bow user gets more value from the reduced dodge cost and the Pierce bonus than they would from Protector’s extra armor, since they’re not blocking hits with a shield in the first place. The Hood also carries Frost Resistance, so you’re not giving that up by choosing Vanguard over Protector.

The catch is that the bonus only exists if you commit to the full set. Mixing one Vanguard piece with two Protector pieces gets you neither the tank stats nor the mobility perks, just a worse version of both.

Pros:

102 total armor with a full set bonus that’s genuinely strong for the right build

Reduced dodge and run stamina costs support an active, mobile playstyle

+10% Pierce damage directly benefits bow and crossbow users

Hood provides Frost Resistance like the Protector Breastplate does

Health and stamina regen bonuses help sustain longer fights without repeated food breaks

Cons:

30 less total armor than Protector, a real gap in raw survivability

The set bonus only activates wearing all three pieces, no partial value

Less useful for a pure shield-and-block playstyle that isn’t dodging much

No Eitr bonus, so it doesn’t serve a mage build the way Caller does

Still gated behind the same mould-and-cast crafting chain as every other Nord set

Vanguard is the pick for anyone running a spear, bow, or fast melee weapon through the Deep North. The lower armor number stops mattering once you’re not getting hit as often in the first place.

5. Ask Armor

Black Forge. Hood, Robes, and Trousers of Ask, crafted from Flametal alongside Ashlands materials.

Ask is the lightest set on this list and the only one from outside the Deep North besides Flametal. At the highest quality most players reach, it comes in around 96 total armor, noticeably behind the heavy sets, but it carries no movement penalty at all and a set bonus that reduces stamina cost on sprinting, jumping, and attacking while adding 10% Pierce damage.

That’s a real tradeoff, not a downgrade. A build that leans on dodge rolling and ranged weapons gets far more mileage out of the stamina savings than it would out of 30 extra armor it’s rarely using to tank a hit anyway. The lack of a movement penalty in particular stands out against every other set here, all of which slow you down to some degree.

It has no elemental resistance built in, so you’re relying entirely on food and capes to cover fire or frost depending on where you’re fighting. That’s a real cost in the Ashlands specifically, where Flametal’s heat resistance is doing a lot of quiet work that Ask doesn’t replicate.

Pros:

No movement speed penalty, unique among the sets on this list

Set bonus reduces sprint, jump, and attack stamina cost while adding Pierce damage

Strong fit for dodge-focused or ranged builds that rarely block hits directly

Lighter weight overall makes inventory management easier during long expeditions

Shares crafting materials with Flametal, so you’re not starting a separate farming loop

Cons:

Lowest total armor of any set on this list at roughly 96

No elemental resistance, so Ashlands heat and Deep North frost both need separate coverage

Weaker choice for anyone who blocks frequently rather than dodging

Still requires farming the same dangerous Flametal ore as the heavy Ashlands set

The stamina savings only pay off if your playstyle is already stamina-hungry

Ask makes sense as a deliberate choice for archers and spear users who are already avoiding hits rather than absorbing them. It’s a worse pick than Flametal for anyone still learning the Ashlands’ patterns and taking damage they shouldn’t be.

How Deep North Armor Actually Gets Made

All three new Deep North sets, Protector, Vanguard, and the Eitr-focused Caller set, run through the same two-stage process as Nord weapons. You find a mould, usually from the Winding Tunnels dungeons or similar Deep North locations, and combine it with Bloodgold and other materials at the appropriate station to produce a cast. The mould is consumed in that step. The cast then goes into the Frost Foundry to become the finished piece.

Bloodgold itself isn’t mined from a vein. It’s smelted from Petrified Tissue, which the biome’s Gammeltrolls drop, so you need to be fighting comfortably in the Deep North before you can start producing your own armor. Bring your best Ashlands gear north first and use it to survive long enough to get the pipeline running.

There’s a fourth Deep North set worth knowing about even though it didn’t make this list: Caller, which trades armor down to 22 per piece in exchange for heavy Eitr regeneration on the robes, trousers, and headdress. It’s not competing for a slot here because it’s a specialist mage pick rather than a general-purpose armor set, but if you’re running a staff build it’s worth more to you than anything above it.

One more thing worth knowing before you commit materials: a bug at launch prevented Protector and Vanguard pieces from being repaired at all. Patch 1.0.10 fixed it. If you’re still seeing repair issues on these sets, you’re on an older build and should update first.

Conclusion

Protector is the set to build if your plan is to stand in front of Kall Fimbulbringer and block. 132 armor and built-in Frost Resistance make it the safest choice for straightforward melee, and it doesn’t ask you to learn anything beyond showing up in it.

The rest of the list earns its place for narrower reasons. Flametal is close behind on raw numbers and is close to mandatory if you’re still working through the Ashlands, since nothing else covers the heat the way it does. Carapace is what gets you through the Mistlands and into the early Ashlands before Flametal is an option. Vanguard trades armor for mobility and stamina efficiency in a way that suits spear, bow, and fast melee builds better than raw defense would. Ask goes furthest in that direction, giving up the most armor for a set bonus and zero movement penalty that reward a dodge-focused playstyle.

Match the set to what you’re actually doing in combat rather than to the biggest number on the tooltip, and the Deep North stops being as punishing as it looks on arrival.

Happy hunting!

Armor in Valheim has always been the boring stat that decides
