Then everyone spikes for half a second, TPS drops, and everything snaps back as if nothing happened. Most owners blame a plugin, a redstone clock, or the host. Sometimes they’re right. Most of the time, the culprit is Java’s garbage collector doing its job at a bad moment.

Garbage collection (GC) is how the Java Virtual Machine frees memory the program no longer uses. A Minecraft server is a Java program, so every server you have ever joined depends on it. When it works, nobody notices. When it’s set up badly, it shows up as stutter that no CPU upgrade can fix.

Here is what garbage collection actually does, which collector your server is probably running, and which flags are worth using in 2026.

Java Garbage Collectors at a Glance

Collector

Pause Behavior

Status

Fit for Minecraft

Serial

Single thread, pauses grow with heap size

Still ships with the JDK

Not recommended

Parallel

Multi-threaded, but long stop-the-world pauses

Default through Java 8

Poor fit, causes visible lag spikes

CMS

Mostly concurrent, shorter pauses, fragmentation over time

Deprecated in Java 9, removed in Java 14

Obsolete

G1

Region-based, aims for a pause target (200 ms by default)

Default since Java 9

Recommended for most servers

ZGC

Almost fully concurrent, sub-millisecond pauses

Production since Java 15, generational by default since Java 23

Large heaps, needs spare CPU

Shenandoah

Concurrent compaction, very short pauses

Production since Java 15, generational mode is a product feature in Java 25

Alternative to ZGC, less tested on Minecraft

What Garbage Collection Actually Does

Minecraft creates objects constantly: block positions, chunk data, entities, item stacks, packets. Once nothing references an object anymore, it’s garbage. The JVM finds that garbage and reclaims the memory so it can be reused. You never free memory by hand like you would in C. The collector does it for you.

The catch is that most collection work needs the application to stop. This is called a stop-the-world pause: the JVM freezes every thread, including the main server thread, until the collector is done. The game loop runs 20 ticks per second, which gives each tick 50 ms. A 200 ms pause swallows four ticks in one go. Players see it as a hitch, and the TPS graph dips and recovers.

Pauses should be short and rare. Aikar, the author of the flags Paper recommends, puts a healthy rate at one young collection every 10 seconds to a few minutes. Velocity’s tuning guide reports pauses under 10 ms every few minutes with its recommended G1 flags, which is very good for a game server.

Why Minecraft Makes So Much Garbage

Minecraft has an extremely high memory allocation rate. Paper’s docs put it at 800 MB per second or more on a 30-player server, and most of that is short-lived data like block positions. Almost all of it dies young.

That is why the young generation matters so much. G1 gives it roughly 5% of the heap by default, which is far too little for this workload. When the young generation is too small, G1 runs young collections once or twice per second. TPS suffers, objects get promoted to the old generation earlier than they should, and the old generation fills up faster. Aikar’s flags exist mostly to fix this one problem.

A Short History of Java Garbage Collectors

Java’s collectors have changed a lot, and the version of Java your server runs decides which one you get.

Serial GC is the original single-threaded collector. It has a tiny footprint, but pauses grow with the size of the heap, so it never made sense for a game server. Parallel GC came next. It uses multiple threads to collect, which is great for batch jobs and bad for anything latency-sensitive. It was the default through Java 8, and Velocity’s docs describe its long pauses as a source of unexplainable lag spikes in Minecraft.

CMS (Concurrent Mark-Sweep) was the low-pause option for years. It did most of its marking while the application kept running, but it didn’t compact memory, so fragmentation built up over time. It was deprecated in Java 9 and removed in Java 14. If you still see CMS flags in an old start script, that script needs rewriting.

G1 (Garbage-First) splits the heap into regions and collects them incrementally, with a pause-time goal you can set. It became the default in Java 9 and is still the default today. ZGC and Shenandoah are the newer low-latency collectors. ZGC was experimental in Java 11 and went into production in Java 15, and Shenandoah followed in the same release. Generational ZGC arrived in Java 21, became the default ZGC mode in Java 23, and the non-generational mode was removed in Java 24. Shenandoah’s generational mode went from experimental in Java 24 to a product feature in Java 25, though you still have to turn it on yourself.

Which Collector Is Your Server Using?

Probably G1. Minecraft 1.17 and later need Java 16 or newer, and G1 is the default on all of those. Minecraft 26.1, released on March 24, 2026, was the first version to require Java 25, and G1 is still the default collector there.

Servers on the old 1.8 to 1.16 versions often ran on Java 8, which meant Parallel GC unless someone overrode it. That is a big part of why Aikar’s flags became so popular.

The server software itself doesn’t change any of this. Vanilla, Spigot, Paper, Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge all run on whatever JVM launches them, so the collector depends on your Java version and your startup flags. Paper publishes the most complete flag documentation. Velocity’s docs recommend G1 with their own flag set. BungeeCord has no official GC guidance, so most owners borrow the same G1 settings from community advice.

How to Tell If Garbage Collection Is Hurting Your Server

GC problems have a recognizable pattern. TPS dips at regular intervals instead of randomly. The console prints “Can’t keep up!” even though the CPU isn’t maxed out. Heap usage sits near 100% all the time, or the server crashes with an OutOfMemoryError when a lot of players explore at once.

To confirm it, turn on GC logging. Paper’s docs give this flag for Java 11 and newer:

Bash
-Xlog:gc*:logs/gc.log:time,uptime:filecount=5,filesize=1M

-Xlog:gc*:logs/gc.log:time,uptime:filecount=5,filesize=1M

The docs note that GC logging doesn’t hurt performance and can stay on permanently, since the files stay around 5 MB. Open the log and look for lines like Pause Young and Pause Full. A healthy server has mostly young collections spaced well apart. Frequent full collections mean the heap is too small, something is leaking memory, or the flags are fighting each other.

If you would rather not read logs by hand, the spark profiler has GC monitoring that lines up collections with server hangs. It shows how often young and old collections happen and how long they take, which is exactly what you need to decide on tuning flags.

Aikar’s Flags, Explained

Aikar’s flags are the community standard for tuning G1 on Minecraft servers, and Paper’s docs still recommend them. These are the flags that do the most work:

Xms equal to Xmx: If the starting heap is lower than the maximum, you have memory the server will never use. G1 handles larger heaps well and simply keeps spare room in the old generation, so there is nothing bad about giving it the full amount.

G1NewSizePercent and G1MaxNewSizePercent: These stretch the young generation to between 30% and 40% of the heap instead of the default 5%. Short-lived objects get more time to die before a collection even starts.

MaxGCPauseMillis=200: This is a goal, not a promise. Paper’s docs explain that 200 ms is about four ticks, short enough that the server catches up instantly and below what players can notice. Setting it lower can backfire, because G1 may then fail to collect fast enough and run out of old generation space, which triggers a full collection.

DisableExplicitGC: Some plugins call System.gc() because they think they can manage memory better than the JVM. Each call forces a full collection and a big lag spike. This flag ignores them.

G1HeapRegionSize=8M: Any single allocation larger than half a region is treated as humongous and goes straight to the old generation, where it is harder to free. A bigger region size keeps normal Minecraft allocations out of that category.

AlwaysPreTouch: The JVM reserves and touches all heap memory at startup, so it is contiguous and ready. Startup takes a bit longer, and the server runs smoother afterward.

Heap Size and Garbage Collection

Paper recommends at least 6 to 10 GB no matter how few players you have, because G1 works better with more memory. There is a ceiling, though. Their docs warn that past a certain point you hit diminishing returns, and buying 32 GB just wastes money.

The other half of the advice is what people forget. Java needs memory on top of Xmx. On a shared host, Paper recommends dropping Xmx and Xms by about 1000 to 1500 MB so the operating system doesn’t kill the server. If your host says you have 8 GB, use around 6500 MB.

If you’re not sure what number to start with, our guide on how much RAM a Minecraft server needs covers it, and the Minecraft RAM calculator gives you an estimate from your loader, player count, and mods.

Should You Try ZGC or Shenandoah?

For most servers, no. G1 with Aikar’s flags is the setup with the most real-world testing behind it. ZGC and Shenandoah become interesting when you have a large heap and logs showing G1 pauses you can’t tune away.

ZGC is almost fully concurrent and keeps pauses under a millisecond. The cost is CPU, since the collector works constantly in the background. Velocity’s docs say ZGC worked well in one large deployment but recommend using it with caution. Their key warning: if ZGC can’t collect garbage faster than the program creates it, the threads generating garbage get paused, and the server looks laggy anyway. The fix is giving it more heap. On Java 25, plain
-XX:+UseZGC
gives you generational ZGC, since the older mode is gone.

Shenandoah is similar, with very short pauses from concurrent compaction. It’s included in OpenJDK builds like Temurin but not in Oracle’s. The Velocity team says it knows of no successful Shenandoah deployments with their proxy, and Minecraft servers have far fewer reports behind them than G1.

If you try either one, remember that Aikar’s flags are G1 flags. Remove them when you switch collectors, test during a busy period, and keep a GC log running so you can compare the results.

Common Garbage Collection Mistakes

Giving Java every last megabyte. Setting Xmx equal to the host’s total memory leaves nothing for the OS, and the kernel’s out-of-memory killer ends the server at the worst possible time. Leave 1 to 1.5 GB free.

Leaving Xms below Xmx. Unused heap is wasted heap, and G1 does better with more room.

Letting plugins force collections. Without DisableExplicitGC, one badly written plugin can trigger a full GC and a visible lag spike whenever it likes.

Copying old flags from old threads. A lot of forum posts still show CMS flags or half of an Aikar set mixed with other settings. Start from Paper’s current page and change only the memory values.

Chasing a tiny pause target. Lowering MaxGCPauseMillis below 200 sounds like the good thing to do, but Paper’s own testing says it makes G1 fall behind and risk a full collection.

Forgetting the Java version after an update. Minecraft 26.1 and later won’t start on Java 21. Check your Java version before you swap the server jar.

GC Tuning by Server Type

Small servers (up to about 10 players): The default G1 setup is fine. Set Xms equal to Xmx, add DisableExplicitGC, and size the heap for the world. A private vanilla server for friends can get by on 3 to 4 GB, though Paper’s recommendation of 6 GB or more gives G1 more breathing room if you run plugins.

Medium servers (10 to 100 players, 6 to 32 GB): Use the full Aikar set. This is where the large young generation pays off, because allocation rates climb with player count.

Modded servers: Forge, NeoForge, and Fabric all run on the same JVM, so the same G1 flags apply. Heavy packs need a bigger heap, and kitchen sink modpacks want around 10 GB even for ten players. Keep GC logging on, because mod updates can change memory behavior overnight.

Large servers and networks (100+ players): Split the load across a proxy and several backend servers, around 12 to 16 GB each, before reaching for exotic collectors. If one backend still shows GC trouble, that is the point to test ZGC or Shenandoah on a copy of it.

Proxies (Velocity and BungeeCord): Proxies are light on memory. Velocity’s docs recommend G1 with a 4M region size, and suggest 512 MB of heap per 500 players plus about 1 GB of headroom.

Running It on a Managed Host

Flags only help if the hardware underneath is fast. The Minecraft tick runs mostly on one thread, so clock speed matters more than core count, and a slow shared CPU will stretch every GC pause. Cybrancee Minecraft servers run on Ryzen CPUs clocked over 4GHz with NVMe SSDs, and plans start at $1.99/month for 1GB. The 6GB plan is $11.99, 8GB is $15.99, 12GB is $23.99, and 16GB is $31.99, with a scalable plan going up to 56GB.

Every plan has unlimited slots and storage, free DDoS protection, scheduled backups, and a 90-day money-back guarantee. The panel supports Vanilla, Forge, NeoForge, Paper, Fabric, Bedrock (Vanilla), and Velocity, and you can switch loaders from the control panel without disruption. It also shows real-time performance, which makes it easier to spot a memory problem before players do, and human support is available 24/7 along with an AI bot companion that helps you with simple and complex problems.

Summary

Garbage collection is the JVM’s way of freeing memory a program no longer needs, and on a Minecraft server it can pause the main tick loop long enough to cause lag. Minecraft allocates memory at a rate of 800 MB per second or more on a 30-player server, mostly in short-lived objects, so the collector has to be tuned to handle that.

G1 is the default collector on Java 9 and later, including Java 25, which Minecraft 26.1 and newer require. Aikar’s flags give G1 a much larger young generation, disable plugin-triggered collections, and keep long-lived data from piling up in the old generation. Set Xms equal to Xmx, leave 1 to 1.5 GB for the OS, and start at 6 to 10 GB if you run a public server.

ZGC and Shenandoah are real options for big heaps, but they cost extra CPU and have far less Minecraft-specific testing behind them. Turn on GC logging, watch for frequent full collections, and change one thing at a time.

Happy mining!

Looking for affordable Minecraft Server Hosting?
