Multiplayer creates a bunch of little problems that don’t seem important when you’re playing alone. Two players can get separated in the same town. One person takes the only working car, and the rest of the group is walking now. Someone finds a useful building and marks it on their map, but nobody else knows about it. A player dies several towns away, and now the group has to decide whether recovering the gear is worth the trip. Storage also creates problems. Four people putting items into the same base means one box ends up with canned food, engine parts, and six kitchen knives.

Mods can help with this stuff without turning Zomboid into a completely different game. A multiplayer mod doesn’t need to add twenty new systems to be useful. Sometimes removing one annoying task is enough. Build 42 is also still getting updates. The current stable version is 42.21, released on September 28, 2026. The update included multiplayer fixes for issues such as zombie duplication and zombies disappearing after players leave and re-enter chunks.

Before adding a mod to your server, check when it was last updated and which build it supports. Plenty of popular mods were made for Build 41, and just because they’re still on the Workshop doesn’t mean they’ll work properly on 42.21.

What Makes a Good Multiplayer Mod?

The first thing to consider is whether the mod actually helps your group. A shared map is useful when people keep getting separated, whereas a better crafting menu makes more sense when everyone is using the same workshop. If nobody needs what a mod adds, there’s not much reason to install it.

It’s also worth checking how the mod handles multiplayer. Some need to be installed by every player, while others have to be configured server-side. Mods that add items or building objects in game can be harder to remove later. Two mods can also cause problems when they change the same interface or vehicle systems.

You should look at how useful a mod will be after a few hours of playing, not just what it adds to the game.

Players On Map Redux

Getting split up is pretty normal when a group has been playing for a while. One person is checking a warehouse in Muldraugh, someone else is already heading back to the car, and the third player has no idea which street everyone is talking about.

Players On Map Redux makes this a lot less annoying by showing other players on the map and minimap. You can see their names, vehicles, and positions, and there are settings for things like display distance and factions. It becomes useful once the server has more than a couple of people. With two players, you can usually just tell the other person where you are. The mod needs to be installed on the server and by the players, and it has a configurable update interval. The default is 500 milliseconds, while using a lower value can put more load on the server. It also shouldn’t be used alongside the original Players On Map.

The Workshop page was last updated in August, so you should test it on the server before relying on it after a big Build 42 update.

The problem with the previous version is it had too much feature information packed together, which made it feel like a Workshop description. This version starts with the actual multiplayer problem and brings the mod into it more naturally.

Share Map Notes

The vanilla map already lets everyone add symbols, but doing it one marker at a time gets annoying.

Share Map Note[B42][MP] lets players share map symbols and text notes as soon as they place them. It can also sync freehand drawings in real time. You can choose whether the notes are shared with everyone or your safehouse. This is useful when several people are out looting at the same time. One player finds a generator magazine and marks the house. Then someone else finds a good farming spot. Another player marks a road that has already been cleared. After a while, the map stops being one person’s notes and starts becoming something the whole group uses. The main thing to check is the version. The Workshop page lists 42.20 as its latest Build 42 update.

CleanUI

Inventory management gets ugly when several players share the same base. CleanUI keeps the normal inventory system while making the panels more compact and configurable. It adds better container organisation, search, sorting and other small interface changes. The current Workshop page lists Build 42.21.0 compatibility and SP/MP support. The multiplayer benefit isn’t that cool-looking. But it just makes it easier to deal with the amount of stuff that starts piling up in a shared safehouse. Someone brings back six bags from a warehouse. Whereas another player is already unloading a truck. Having a cleaner loot panel means less clicking around when you’re trying to find something.

CleanUI requires NeatUI Framework, and the framework needs to load before it. The server also needs the required Workshop item, and a full restart is recommended after changing the configuration. It also isn’t something you’d combine with other inventory interface mods. Anything that changes the inventory, loot panels, or container behaviour could cause conflicts. For a server with a huge storage room, this is probably more useful than adding another weapon pack.

Clean HotBar

Clean HotBar is a smaller change, but you notice it more when things get hectic. The mod gives the hotbar clearer information about item condition, weapon state, and firearm ammunition. You can also change its size and opacity. You usually don’t think much about the hotbar during a normal loot run. Then a window breaks and suddenly there are zombies in the hallway. One weapon is nearly dead, and you’re trying to switch to medical gear before getting hit again. So having clearer information there can make those moments a little easier.

The author notes that full regression testing for 42.21 was still being completed and asks users to report issues with reproduction steps and mod lists. It also has the usual UI-mod problem, so avoid using it with other mods that change the same hotbar or equipment interface.

Neat Crafting

Once a multiplayer base gets busy, the crafting menu can get annoying. Not because crafting itself is difficult. It’s because one person is looking for a certain component, whereas someone else is already using the nearby workstation, and another player is trying to find the recipe they actually need.

Neat Crafting replaces the default Build 42 crafting interface with a searchable, filterable recipe browser. You can search by recipe name, required items, or the item it produces, and the nearby containers update as you move around. That last part is useful in a shared workshop. You don’t always want to empty three crates onto the floor just to find out whether the screws for a recipe are somewhere in storage.

The mod currently supports B42.9 through B42.21.x and both host and dedicated-server multiplayer. It requires NeatUI Framework with the framework loading before Neat Crafting and any add-ons that come after it. It doesn’t really change how survival works. You just spend less time digging through crafting menus.

Neat Building

Building a large multiplayer base comes with a different problem. Everyone wants to change something. Somebody is trying to make the entrance look good while the other person is asking where the wall went.

Neat Building replaces the Build 42 Build menu with a more compact interface that includes search and filtering. The current Workshop page lists B42.21.x support and multiplayer support. There are several versions of the mod, including UI-only versions and others that add buildables and railings. That can be useful on a server because you don’t necessarily have to add every extra building change just to get the better interface. Neat Building also requires NeatUI Framework. Its current compatibility notes mention conflicts with Buildables Expansion, Rebalanced Prop Moving and Stairs East & South, with a separate compatibility setup for the last one.

The current page also recommends making backups when changing buildable variants on an established save. That part is worth paying attention to. Changing the UI is one thing. Removing something that has already been added to a long-running base is another.

Push Vehicle

Vehicle problems are guaranteed once a multiplayer server has been running for a while. Someone leaves a damaged car in the middle of the road. Another player comes back with a different vehicle and can’t get past it. Then somebody says, “Just push it.” Vanilla doesn’t make that easy. Push Vehicle lets characters physically push stationary vehicles forward, backward, or sideways depending on the situation using Strength. The current Workshop listing identifies it as B42.21+ MP and includes server-side configuration options. It’s a tiny change, but it fixes a real multiplayer annoyance.

You don’t need a big vehicle overhaul just because someone left a car in the wrong place. You can just move it and carry on. There aren’t any complicated new systems to learn either. If the server already uses several vehicle mods, then you should check compatibility first. Mods that change things like towing, vehicle physics, or interactions can sometimes overlap.

Mods That Are More Useful With Friends

Some mods barely matter in solo play because you already know where everything is. But with friends, they make a lot more sense. A shared map is one example. One person can be in Louisville while someone else is still trying to get back through a town full of zombies. Nobody has to stop and keep asking where everyone is. Inventory and crafting changes work the same way. Opening one crate is easy. But opening twenty because five people have dumped loot into the same warehouse isn’t.

These mods don’t really add more content. They just cut down some of the little annoyances that come from several people doing different things.

Things to Check Before Adding Mods

Build 42.21 is new enough that version checking matters. Look for the exact build number on the Workshop page. “Build 42 compatible” is a bit too broad when the game is still changing this quickly. You should check dependencies and load order too. Neat Crafting, Neat Building, and CleanUI all rely on NeatUI Framework.

Then check who actually needs the mod. Players On Map Redux, for example, has to be installed on the server and by every player. You should back up a long-running save before changing a large mod list, especially with mods that add things to the world. After changing the server configuration, fully restart the server before everyone joins.

Which Mods Should You Add?

For Navigation

Players On Map Redux is useful when everyone is moving around different parts of the map, and you need to know where the group is.

Share Map Notes is better for marking locations and useful buildings. Its Workshop page still lists 42.20 rather than a specific 42.21 update, so test it before putting it on a live server.

For Storage

CleanUI makes it easier to deal with shared containers and loot without changing how survival actually works.

For Crafting

Neat Crafting is useful when the workshop gets busy and finding a recipe starts taking longer than actually making the item.

For Base Building

Neat Building makes more sense on larger shared safehouses where several people are constantly building and changing things.

For Vehicles

Push Vehicle fixes one simple problem: a car is blocking the road, and nobody can move it.

For General Quality of Life

Clean HotBar makes the hotbar easier to read without changing the combat system itself.

Conclusion

A multiplayer Project Zomboid server doesn’t need a giant modpack to feel better. A few small mods can fix problems that only start showing up after several people have been sharing the same world for a while.

Finding each other gets easier. Storage is less messy. Long trips take less planning, and building a shared base involves less time digging through menus.

You should pick them based on how the group actually plays. A driving-heavy server will get more use out of navigation and vehicle mods. Whereas a group living in one large safehouse will probably use inventory, crafting, and building more.

There is no need to copy a hundred-mod collection just because it’s popular. A smaller setup is usually easier to manage and keep working when the next update arrives.

Project
