Then the question every server owner hits shows up: how much RAM does a Terraria server actually need? Ask around Discord or Reddit, and you’ll hear everything from “512 MB is plenty” to “get 16 GB for Calamity.” Both answers can be right, depending on what you run.

A vanilla server for a handful of friends is doing well on 1 to 2 GB. A Calamity server needs around 6 GB. Add Thorium on top and 8 GB becomes the safer option.

Here’s what Terraria servers need in 2026, what changed with the 1.4.5 update, and how to land on a number without guessing.

The Short Answer

Terraria keeps the whole world in memory at once, and that one design choice explains most of what follows. Hosting guides agree on four tiers: 1 to 2 GB for a small vanilla server, 3 to 4 GB for a busier vanilla or lightly modded one, 6 to 8 GB for Calamity and bigger mod stacks, and 10 GB or more for several heavy mods or very large groups.

The part people miss is that world size barely matters. A Large world takes longer to generate and takes up more disk space, but it uses roughly the same RAM as a Small one for the same group of players. Mods are the ones that push memory up. The mod list matters far more than the player count, and CPU speed often gives out before RAM does.

In practice, pick the tier that matches your mod list, watch your usage in the host panel, and upgrade only when you get close to the limit. Terraria worlds carry over when you move to a bigger plan, so starting small costs you nothing.

History of Terraria Server Memory Usage

Terraria launched in May 2011 with the design it still uses: the server loads every tile, NPC, item, and player into memory and simulates all of it together. Early worlds were small, and so was the footprint.

Update 1.2 in 2013 brought much bigger worlds, but memory use only rose a little. Even today, a Large world adds just a few hundred MB over a Small one. Journey’s End (1.4) arrived in 2020 with a lot more content, and typical servers still sat in the low gigabytes. Community from around 2016 put a small server with 3 to 4 players at about 0.9 GB idle and 1.4 GB under load.

The big shift came from modding. tModLoader made modded multiplayer common, and the default build is 32-bit, which caps memory at 4 GB no matter how much RAM the plan has. A 64-bit build removes that cap and is available from the tModLoader GitHub releases, and some hosts run it by default. Mods are loaded at startup, so a server with Calamity or Thorium starts out heavy before anyone joins. TShock, the popular admin tool, adds very little on top of vanilla.

Then 2026 happened. Terraria 1.4.5, “Bigger and Boulder,” landed on January 27 with more than 650 new items, a new crafting interface, a reworked world seed menu, Palworld and Dead Cells crossover content, and close to 900 bug fixes. Version 1.4.5.7 followed on August 19 and is described as the last hotfix unless something critical turns up. Re-Logic’s September update says the first phase of crossplay testing is close.

None of that changed what a vanilla server needs. Hosts still call it one of the lightest servers around. What changed is the mod situation. As of September 2026, the stable tModLoader still runs on the 1.4.4 base, and the 1.4.5 version is in development. So if you play Calamity, you’re on a 1.4.4 world, and the server and every player need the exact same tModLoader version to connect.

Server Performance and Resource Usage

A Terraria server leans on four things, and each one has a different role.

CPU: The server simulates the entire world on essentially one core. It can’t use extra cores well, so clock speed beats core count. Around 3 GHz or more usually runs smoothly, while anything under 2 GHz can show NPCs teleporting and slowdowns during spawns. Boss fights and invasions fill the screen with projectiles and enemies, and that is when a slow core shows itself.

RAM: Memory holds every tile, NPC, item, and player state. Each connected player adds a bit of overhead for their inventory, position, and nearby entities, and big events cause temporary spikes. Mods are the largest factor by far. Quality of life mods like Boss Checklist or Recipe Browser barely register, but a big content mod can add hundreds of MB to the server. Some recommendations from hosts are: about 1 GB for a small vanilla server, 2 to 4 GB for a vanilla server with 8 or more players and active events, and 4 to 6 GB or more for Calamity, with long sessions creeping upward. Generating a fresh Large world with mods also needs more memory than playing on it afterward, so the first start can look scarier than it is.

Disk: Once the world is loaded, disk speed has almost no effect on gameplay. Storage matters during world generation and periodic saves. A
.wld
file runs from a few tens of MB for a Small world to a few hundred MB for a Large one. An SSD or NVMe drive makes loading and saving faster, but even a modest disk handles a normal server.

Network: Terraria uses UDP and TCP on port 7777 by default and doesn’t need much bandwidth. Even more than 10 players stay at modest speeds. Latency affects dodging and block placement more than raw bandwidth does. The server supports up to 255 players on paper, but 8 to 16 is the range where most groups play comfortably.

RAM Recommendations

Treat these as starting points, not promises.

Scenario

Players

Mods

Recommended RAM

Notes

Hosted for a friend or two

1 to 3

None

2 GB

Vanilla idles well under 1 GB on a small world. Add the server’s own overhead, a world, and a few hours of play, and the 6 GB baseline starts to make sense.

Skip the Math With a RAM Calculator

If tables and rules feel like homework, Cybrancee offers a free RAM Calculator alongside our hosting services. Drag the player slider, set how many mods you plan to run, and it gives you an estimate of the memory your server needs, along with a recommended plan. It’s only an estimate, since individual mods and player behavior can shift the real number, but it beats guessing. Try it on our website.

Cybrancee also offers Terraria server hosting, so if you’d rather skip the setup and keep your world online around the clock, you can start with the amount of RAM the calculator suggests and upgrade later if your mod list grows.

Common Mistakes and Pitfalls

Blaming RAM for CPU lag: If lag only shows up during Moon Lord, a Pumpkin Moon, or an invasion while memory looks fine, the problem is almost always single-core speed. More RAM won’t fix that. A faster core will, and extra cores won’t help if each one is slow.

Running 32-bit tModLoader: The 32-bit build caps at 4 GB, so a server on a 12 GB plan can still crash at the 4 GB mark. If you run heavy mods, use the 64-bit build, or check that your host does.

Too little RAM for the mod list: Out-of-memory crashes during world generation, mod loading, or heavy play usually mean the server needs more room. Watch usage in your panel. If it sits near 100%, remove mods you don’t need or move to a bigger plan.

Mismatched tModLoader versions: This isn’t a RAM problem, but it looks like one when nobody can join. The server and every player must run the same tModLoader version and the same mods, and as of September 2026 that means the 1.4.4 base.

Item piles and NPC overload: Hundreds of dropped items, big statue farms, and towns packed with NPCs all add load. Clear loose items, trim wiring contraptions, and encourage players to store their loot.

Cranked spawn rates and events: A high monster spawn multiplier multiplies the entities the server has to track. Keep spawn rates at default unless you have a reason, and make sure the CPU has headroom before a big event with a full server.

Skipping restarts: Some mods slowly accumulate memory over a long session. A scheduled restart, nightly or weekly, clears that out and is worth setting up on any modded server.

Buying more than you need: Vanilla Terraria is one of the cheapest games to host. Paying for 8 GB to run a vanilla world for four friends wastes money. Start at 2 to 4 GB and scale up when your numbers say so.

Summary

Terraria loads the whole world into memory, but the world itself isn’t what costs you RAM. Mods are. Plan on 1 to 2 GB for a small vanilla server, 3 to 4 GB for a busier one, 6 to 8 GB for Calamity and bigger stacks, and 10 GB or more for several heavy mods. Pick your number from the mod list first, and the player count second, then watch your usage and adjust. The 1.4.5 update and its hotfixes don’t change that math, but they do change which tModLoader version you need to check before you start.

Before you launch, run through this list:

Choose RAM based on your mod list, not the biggest plan.

Use 64-bit tModLoader for anything beyond a light mod setup.

Pick a fast single-core CPU, ideally 3 GHz or higher.

Match your server and players on the same tModLoader version.

Keep spawn rates at default and clear dropped items regularly.

Schedule restarts for modded servers.

Start at 2 to 4 GB for vanilla and upgrade when usage climbs.

Recheck your numbers after each major update or mod change.

Happy digging!

Looking for affordable Terraria server hosting?
