Let’s say you’ve just bought Terraria and want to know more about this game’s progression, especially when it comes to the boss order, or you’re already playing for a while, and you’re not sure which boss to approach next. It’s completely normal, although Terraria doesn’t have a strict boss order you have to follow; following a structured boss order will result in a greater experience, making the game’s progression feel much easier and smoother.
Some bosses are completely optional, while others must be defeated because they unlock important changes or they’re just necessary to advance to the next stage of the game. Knowing the right order can save you multiple hours; with different progression paths and so many different bosses with optional encounters, it can be difficult to know how to approach.
In this guide, we’ll go through a recommended Terraria boss order, explain when you should fight each boss, some information about each one, followed by some useful tips and common mistakes to make sure you’ll have an enjoyable experience.
Terraria Boss Progression

To start, Terraria’s progression system can be generally divided into three stages: Pre-Hardmode, Hardmode, and Endgame (a sub-phase of Hardmode). Each stage introduces stronger enemies, better equipment, and new areas for you to explore.
With all of these stages and bosses, you don’t have to follow a strict order; some players defeat bosses earlier than recommended. However, following a progression path can make it easier for new players to learn the game and generally make players obtain stronger equipment before facing stronger bosses.
Another important factor is that not every boss is required. This game features optional bosses, and they can still be worth fighting, providing unique equipment, accessories, materials,s or other types of rewards that can make the game easier as you progress.
General Preparation Tips
Before actually challenging any boss, taking your time to prepare can significantly reduce the fight’s difficulty, because you’ll already know what to do and be prepared. Several things are useful for almost every boss fight.
- Choose the Right Equipment: Make sure your equipment type matches your chosen class and also the boss you’re fighting. Some bosses are easier to defeat with ranged weapons, while some of them may reward close-range damage.
- Learn the Boss: Understanding how a boss behaves and attacks will surely give you an advantage over simply having good equipment. Look very closely at its attack patterns so you know when the right moment is to attack and when to dodge its attacks.
- Manage Your Health: You should never wait until your HP bar is almost empty to use a health potion. Keep track of your health during the fight, and you’ll know when the right moment is for a potion.
- Prioritize Mobility: Mobility should be your main priority in a boss fight where movement is the key to winning. Being able to move quickly, jump, and dodge attacks with some mobility items, like wings or boots, will win you most of your fights.
- Prepare for Different Phases: The vast majority of bosses become more aggressive as you damage them. Be prepared for those stages, as the fight can become more difficult.
Pre-Hardmode Boss Order

- King Slime: One of the earliest bosses you can encounter in the game, being a good introduction to boss fight mechanics and much more. While completely optional, it can be a great first challenge for new players.
This boss can be summoned using a Slime Crown at any time, although it can also spawn randomly with a very low chance (0.33%). He has relatively simple attacks, making it way easier to defeat than the rest.

- Eye of Cthulhu: This is usually one of the first major bosses new players should look into. It will automatically spawn when you achieve an early level of the game, meaning you can encounter it without summoning it, unlike the King Slime.
This boss features two forms, becoming more aggressive in its second form. It is recommended that you face this boss in an open area with enough mobility, because moving around is very important.
You should be prepared with some decent early-game armor, a reliable ranged or melee weapon, Hermes Boots, which are very useful for mobility, and some healing and movement potions.

- Eater of Worlds / Brain of Cthulhu: These are two separate bosses; the one you’ll fight depends on your world’s evil biome. If you’re playing on a Corruption world, you will encounter the Eater of Worlds, but if you’re playing on a Crimson world, you will fight the Brain of Cthulhu; that’s it.
Both of them are very important for progression because upon defeat they drop valuable materials used to craft stronger equipment, allowing you to access resources based on your world’s evil biome. You can easily manage these fights by building an arena designed around the boss’s movement.

- Queen Bee: This one is an optional boss found mainly in the Underground Jungle. While being optional, it means you don’t necessarily have to defeat her to progress in the story, but her reward will be very useful later on in Pre-Hardmode.
You can summon her by breaking a Larva in the Bee Hive mini-biome. Also, you can summon her manually using a craftable item called Abeemination that can be crafted by hand. The Underground Jungle is already pretty dangerous, so make sure you’re well prepared before going in.

- Skeletron: Once you’ve explored enough of the world, like mighty caves and dungeons, defeated some bosses, and upgraded your equipment significantly, Skeletron should be your next opponent.
Summoning Skeletron requires you to speak to the Old Man at the Dungeon’s entrance, but only at night. You’ll need to select the “Curse” option, and he will turn into Skeletron. Defeating him will grant you access to the Dungeon, which contains valuable items.

- Deerclops: Is an optional boss found in the Snow biome associated with Don’t Starve Together. This one is also not required for game progression, but defeating it you will get many coins and other valuable items.
The Deerclops can be easily summoned manually by using a Deer Thing while being in the Snow or Ice biome, doesn’t matter the time. Unlike other bosses, you can also find him randomly at midnight during a Blizzard by meeting some conditions.

- Wall of Flesh: The Wall of Flesh is the final Pre-Hardmode boss, being one of the most important boss fights in Terraria. Once you defeat it, the world will permanently convert from Pre-Hardmode to Hardmode, introducing new content, stronger enemies, new ores, better weapons, and several new bosses to defeat.
For you and your friends to actually defeat the Wall of Flesh, you’ll have to attack either its mouth or eyes. With two eyes and one mouth, all three of them have the same health counter, so you’ll need to break one of the three components to defeat the boss.
Because defeating it will completely change the world, and not only that, it is worth preparing beforehand. Be sure you have upgraded your equipment, organize everything in your inventory, and, as a recommendation, you can build a long platform across The Underworld to give yourself enough space for mobility, because it matters.
What to do Between Boss Fights
After defeating a specific boss, you shouldn’t rush to encounter another one as soon as possible because you won’t be prepared and won’t have the necessary weapons. That time between boss fights is very important for improving your character and preparing with stronger equipment for what’s next.
- Upgrade Your Equipment: It is essential to use materials earned from previously defeated bosses and newly discovered areas to craft stronger weapons, armor, and some accessories.
- Build an Arena: To make sure you have a fair advantage and enough room to move, you’ll need to build an arena for almost every boss fight. A good arena can make a huge difference by giving room to move and dodge attacks.
- Gather Potions: Buff potions can significantly boost your statistics by giving you more damage, greater endurance, faster movement, and efficient regeneration. Using a couple of buff potions right before fighting a boss will surely improve your chance of success.
- Explore: Exploration during the time between bosses is actually very useful, as it can provide you with stronger weapons, accessories, and materials that aren’t necessarily tied to boss progression.
Hardmode Boss Order
Once the Wall of Flesh is defeated, your world will convert into Hardmode. This change comes with new bosses, stronger enemies, and new content. Hardmode progression isn’t completely linear; this order works well for every player:

- Queen Slime: One of the earliest bosses you can fight after entering Hardmode. Like some bosses from Pre-Hardmode, she is completely optional, but defeating her will grant you useful items and resources to help you advance without issues.
You can easily summon her by using a Gelatin Crystal while being in The Hallow or Underground Hallow, at any time throughout the day. The fight is relatively easy compared to the next bosses, meaning you can defeat her while in early-game to grab useful equipment.

- The Mechanical Bosses: This term refers to three bosses available in the early phase of Hardmode: The Destroyer, The Twins, and Skeletron Prime. You don’t have to fight them in a specific order; the order should be considered based on your class and equipment.
- The Destroyer: Is a mechanical Hardmode boss that is related to the Eater of Worlds, being a more difficult version of it. Instead of all his body being a single target, he’s divided into multiple sections so that each one can be damaged by weapons. Meaning he can be vulnerable to weapons that deal piercing or area damage. You can summon The Destroyer using a Mechanical Worm at night, or he can randomly spawn at dusk once a Demon or Crimson Altar has been defeated.
- The Twins: A mechanical pair of eyes which are similar to the Eye of Cthulhu, but harder to defeat. This pair is made of two flying entities, Retinazer and Spazmatism. They are connected through a tendril, and each one has its own health and attack, meaning you’ll need to defeat both of them to advance. The Twins can be summoned using an item called Mechanical Eye, only at night. Like The Destroyer, they can spawn randomly under the same conditions.
- Skeletron Prime: Is the Hardmode version of the normal Skeletron available in Pre-Hardmode, being more difficult to defeat. He’s made of a head and four limbs with unique attack patterns, but similarly to Skeletron, only his head has to be targeted for a successful defeat. Skeletron Prime can be summoned manually in any biome using a Mechanical Skull, also at night. Like The Destroyer and The Twins, he can spawn randomly under the same conditions, all three of them with a chance of 10%.

- Plantera: A Hardmode boss that becomes available to fight in the Underground Jungle only after defeating all three Mechanical Bosses (The Destroyer, The Twins, Skeletron Prime), meaning this will be your next main target. The fight is harder compared to the Mechanical Bosses; her attacks become more aggressive as her health bar drops. Upon defeat, Plantera drops a Temple Key, used to access the Jungle Temple.
After you’ve defeated all three of the Mechanical Bosses, Plantera’s Bulbs will begin to randomly spawn throughout the Underground Jungle. Breaking these bulbs will summon Plantera immediately, so be cautious.

- Golem: After defeating Plantera, Golem becomes available to face off in the Jungle Temple. Generally considered easier than its predecessor, Plantera, he has different attack types; it can attack you by launching barrages of projectiles, hitting you with its fists, or stomping on you. When you defeat him,m you’ll unlock some new crossover events: the Martian Madness, the Lunar Events, and Tier 3 of the Old One’s Army crossover.
You can summon the Golem by using a Lihzahrd Power Cell while being at the Lihzahrd Altar. Upon activation, the Lihzahrd Power Cell is consumed, and the Golem will be spawned instantly.

- Duke Fishron: An optional boss available in the Ocean. While you can encounter him even when you’ve just initiated Hardmode, his difficulty is relatively harder than Golem’s; that’s why he’s often called a post-Golem boss. Fighting him is not required for game progression, but he’ll reward you with powerful items, useful as you progress in the story.
Duke Fishron can be summoned at any time by fishing in the Ocean, but you must use Truffle Worm as bait. Once he’s summoned, he will become unvulnerable during his animation.

- Empress of Light: This one is also an optional boss mainly found in The Hallow. It is highly recommended that you fight this boss during the night, because throughout the day, she becomes “enraged” with dangerous damage. The Empress of Light is not required to advance in the game’s progression, but defeating it will grant you powerful weapons and valuable items.
She can be summoned by killing a Prismatic Lacewing, no matter the time. They spawn in The Hollow biome, on the Surface, between dusk and midnight.

- Lunatic Cultist: After you defeat the Golem, you can find the Lunatic Cultist in the Dungeon. Defeating this boss is one of the most important steps towards the final fight. Once defeated, he will initiate the Lunar Events, introducing four Celestial Pillars, but will not drop any weapons or materials. He’ll drop the Ancient Manipulator, a crafting station used to craft items that require Luminite and Lunar Fragments.
When it comes to summoning, he is summoned after killing the Cultists that will spawn at the Dungeon entrance, only after Skeletron and Golem have been totally defeated.

- Lunar Events: These ones are not actually a boss fight, but they are very important for your progression when you reach the part between the Lunatic Cultist and the Moon Lord. After defeating the Lunatic Cultist, four Celestial Pillars will appear across the world with a large moon in their backgrounds, spawning multiple unique enemies at high spawn rates.
Defeating a Celestial Pillar will revert the affected area to normal. At first, the pillar is invulnerable; that’s because you have to defeat 100 enemies within its section. After that, the pillar’s shield will be removed, and you can attack it. Defeating all four of them will trigger the Moon Lord’s spawn.

- Moon Lord: Finally, after a well-deserved wait, you’ll face the Moon Lord, the final major boss of Terraria. The Moon Lord is significantly more challenging than all previous bosses and requires players to be able to manage multiple attacks while dealing with several vulnerable targets with a separate health bar (Left hand, Right hand, and his Head).
To defeat him, you’ll have to target his hands and head before his core becomes vulnerable. Be careful; his powerful projectiles and eye attacks are very overwhelming if you’re not prepared accordingly. Get prepared, and you’ll handle this.
He will spawn shortly after you destroy all of the four Celestial Pillars, or you can summon him manually using a Celestial Sigil in the world where Golem has been defeated, in any biome, at any time.
When the summon is initiated, a well-known status message will appear: “Impending doom approaches…”. This message indicates the start of the 60-second spawning countdown, so be ready.
Multiplayer Boss Progression

As we all know, playing Terraria with a couple of friends changes the way you’re approaching each boss. Having multiple players on your server can make boss fights easier because everyone is dealing damage and has their own role; this means you’ll also need to master coordination.
Before summoning a boss, make sure everyone in the group has the right equipment and knows the plan. You can also try different classes with your friends to create a powerful group by combining each role.
Also, fighting arenas become more useful when in large groups. With several players moving and attacking at the same time, having an arena with enough space for mobility will significantly improve your group’s rate of success.
Finally, it is very important to make sure your server is stable and works well. Here at Cybrancee, you can get rid of lag or connection problems during a boss fight with our adaptive Terraria Hosting Plans. With instant setup, highly optimized dedicated servers, DDoS protection, server locations around the world, up to 32GB RAM on our best plan, and much more. Get started with $3.99/month.
Common Progression Mistakes
Even though you think you’re prepared to take over your adventure, you can still experience common mistakes that are usually easy to fix. Terraria already gives you enough freedom, which means players, new and otherwise, can make the progression more difficult than it needs to be. Avoiding a few common mistakes will make your experience way smoother and less disturbing.
- Fighting Bosses Too Early: Let’s say you have the necessary resources to summon a boss, although you can; this doesn’t mean you can also defeat it. Consider upgrading your equipment every time, if possible, before taking on a boss.
- Ignoring Accessories: Players will often mainly focus on stronger weapons and armor but miss out on accessories. Mobility and defensive accessories can make a huge difference in your boss fights; make sure you consider those.
- Not Preparing an Arena: Fighting a boss in a random area with limited space to move will prevent you from successfully dodging his attacks. A simple built arena with some platforms and basic buffs will make boss encounters easier.
- Skipping Exploration: Your main focus shouldn’t be only on boss progression. You can also progress through caves, biome exploration such as the Jungle, find your way through underground labyrinths such as the Dungeon, and many more.
- Treating Optional Bosses as Required: To actually finish Terraria, you don’t have to defeat every boss the game offers. Bosses such as Queen Bee, Deerclops, Queen Slime, Duke Fishron, and Empress of Light are all optional bosses, meaning they’re not required to finish the game, but their rewards can be attractive if you’re looking for extra strength.
Summary
Terraria is the game of freedom when it comes to progression, allowing players to choose their own path when it comes to exploring the world, preparing, and taking on bosses. Following a boss order can make your experience smoother by knowing what to do, with fewer disturbing problems.
Starting with early Pre-Hardmode bosses, from King Slime and progressing gradually through the story all the way to the Moon Lord, a well-planned boss order will give you a reliable path throughout the entire game.
Keep in mind that not every boss is mandatory. There are multiple optional encounters you’ll meet, such as Queen Bee, Queen Slime, Deerclops, Duke Fishron, and Empress of Light. Every one of them can be challenged whenever you’re ready, depending on whether you’re looking for stronger equipment and valuables or just extra fun.
Very important: don’t rush your progress from one boss to another. Use that time between the fights to explore different areas, upgrade your equipment, gather new ores, and prepare for your next opponent. Whether you’re playing alone or with your friends, preparing and planning your next move can make the toughest boss fights seem easier because of that.
