Valheim 1.0: 7 Must-Know Tips and Tricks

You’ve cleared Ashlands, you’re wearing a full set of Flametal armor, and you just stepped off the boat into the Deep North for the first time. Ten minutes later you’re dead, and you’re not entirely sure what killed you. That’s basically everyone’s first trip into Valheim’s final biome since the 1.0 update landed on September 9, 2026. Between the new Bloodgold gear, the Kall Fimbulbringer boss fight, and a crafting chain that runs through two brand new stations, there’s a lot to sort out before you’re actually ready for any of it. Here are seven things worth knowing before you go.

1. Make Sure You’re Actually Ready Before You Sail

Full Ashlands gear is the floor here, not a suggestion. Flametal armor and a maxed Ashlands weapon get you through the first hour or so. Anything less and a single Gammeltroll throw can end the run before you’ve even found a place to build.

Frost resistance matters more in this biome than anywhere else in the game. Mead or the Moder power effect covers it, and you’ll want it active before you set foot on land. The cold itself won’t kill you the way Ashlands heat did, but a few of the local enemies will, and you don’t want to be fighting them while also losing health to the environment.

Snow piles up thick across the whole biome, so clear it before you try to build anything. You’ll also want a level 4 or 5 Black Forge and a Frost Foundry going near your base early, since almost everything else on this list runs through one or both of them.

2. Understand How Moulds and Bloodgold Actually Work

Nearly every Deep North weapon and most of the armor starts life as a Mould, and a Mould only makes one item. You’ll find them in the Winding Tunnels dungeons, in Memorial Sites, or as drops from Krigen, with better odds off higher-star enemies. Once you use one, it’s gone, so it’s worth deciding what you actually want before you crack it open on the first weapon type you find.

Bloodgold is the other resource you’ll be chasing constantly. It comes from Gammeltrolls, but not from just fighting them: once one falls, its body turns to stone and you need Ember Charges to blow it apart before it drops anything. Most Deep North gear is a two-step process from there. You cast the item at a Black Forge using Bloodgold and whatever else the recipe calls for, then hardened it at the Frost Foundry before it’s actually usable.

3. Craft Lightning Strike for the Hardest Hitting Spell in the Game

If you want the single biggest hit in Valheim’s current spell list, Lightning Strike is it. The Elemental Magic staff fires a bolt for 300 lightning damage at quality one, climbing to 360 at quality four, and it only weighs 0.3, so carrying it barely touches your movement speed. There’s no bench recipe for this one. You need the Mould first, then a level 3 Galdr Table to cast it using Bloodgold, Nornathread, and Thunderblood Essence, then a trip to the Frost Foundry to finish hardening it.

Each cast costs 40 Eitr, and the cast itself is slow with no secondary attack, so it works better as a burst option between other actions than something you spam. It’s excellent against most Deep North enemies and anything flying. Just don’t build your whole strategy around it for the final boss, which we’ll get to.

4. Upgrade Your Nord Crossbow into a Thunderblood Crossbow

The Thunderblood Crossbow takes a Nord Crossbow you’ve already built and adds lightning on top of its pierce damage, landing around 274 pierce plus 45 lightning per bolt. That makes it the hardest hitting ranged weapon in the game per shot, though the 3.5 second reload means you’re not firing it on cooldown. Treat it as a hit and run weapon rather than something you stand and trade with. To make one, build a Nord Crossbow first, then combine it with 20 Bloodgold and a Thunderblood Essence at a level 4 Black Forge.

It’s great for picking off Krigen and anything flying from a distance. Just bring a shield or have an escape route planned, because you’ll be exposed the entire time it’s reloading.

5. Choose Your Melee Weapon: Nord, Frostfire, or Thunderblood

Every Deep North weapon starts life as a plain Nord version with strong physical damage, and later you can convert it into either a Frostfire variant, which trades some physical damage for frost and fire, or a Thunderblood variant, which adds lightning instead. The Frostfire Greatsword is a good example. Built from a Nord Greatsword, 20 Bloodgold, and a Frostfire Essence at a level 4 Black Forge, it swings for 186 slash, 88 frost, and 12 fire, and its secondary sweep deals triple damage while only costing 5% movement speed to carry.

If you’d rather have knockback and crowd control than reach, the Frostfire Sledge does something similar with a Nord Sledge. It trades some of the base 225 blunt damage for 200 blunt, 88 frost, and 12 fire, and you can pick a Thunderblood Essence instead of Frostfire if you’d rather have lightning on it. Either way, you can only pick one element per weapon.

Both elemental upgrades are genuinely stronger than the base Nord weapon against most things you’ll fight in this biome. Keep reading, though, because that’s not true for everything.

6. Build a Tank Loadout with the Protector Set and Moose Hide Cape

For raw survivability, nothing beats the Protector set. Each of the three pieces gives 44 armor, adding up to 132 total with zero movement penalty, which is unusual for armor this heavy. The Breastplate also carries frost resistance on its own. The catch is that pieces drop from Krigen as RNG loot, and each piece needs its own Mould before you can even start the cast-and-harden process at a level 4 Black Forge and Frost Foundry, so building the full set takes real farming time.

Pair it with a Moose Hide Cape, which gives 12 armor and built-in frost resistance for 6 Moose Hide, 2 Moose Sinew, and 5 Bloodgold at a level 4 Black Forge. It does cost 20% more stamina on attacks and running while worn, which is a fair trade for a build that doesn’t need a single frost mead to survive the cold.

7. Equip Wolf Sight for Ranged Builds, and Save a Physical Weapon for Kall

Wolf Sight is a Mountain tier trinket, so you don’t even need to be in Deep North to make it. Just 5 Silver, 5 Wolf Fang, and a Fenring Trophy at a Forge. Once your Adrenaline bar fills to 55 through active combat, it triggers automatically and gives you 20 Bows, 20 Spears, and 10% pierce damage for 30 seconds. If you’re running a bow or spear build and already have a Fenring Trophy sitting in a chest from your Ashlands run, there’s no real reason not to craft this.

Now for the part that actually changes how you should be gearing up. Kall Fimbulbringer, the final boss, resists pierce, fire, frost, and lightning, and he’s completely immune to spirit damage. Blunt and slash go through at full value. That means the Frostfire Greatsword you farmed a Mould for, the Thunderblood Crossbow, and Lightning Strike are all weaker than they look once you’re actually standing in front of Kall. A plain, unupgraded Nord Sword, Nord Greatsword, or Nord Sledge will outperform its elemental version in that specific fight, even though the elemental versions win almost everywhere else in the biome. Keep at least one physical Nord weapon in your inventory before you summon him.

A Few More Things to Keep in Mind

Hotfix 1.0.10 made heavy armor repairable again, so don’t avoid the Protector set over old worries about repair costs. If you’re playing with friends on different platforms, full crossplay across PC, PS5, Xbox, and Switch 2 shipped with 1.0, so there’s no excuse not to bring the whole group along for Jotun invasions.

If you’re leaning into a caster build with Lightning Strike or another staff, plan your food around Eitr regeneration rather than treating it like a stamina weapon. Showing up with the wrong food loadout is one of the more common ways a Deep North run goes sideways before you even reach a boss fight.

Deep North is a real gear check, and it punishes anyone who wanders in expecting the same difficulty curve as Mistlands or the Plains. Farm your Bloodgold, hold onto Moulds until you actually know what you want, and get your Black Forge and Frost Foundry running before you commit to a full loadout. Do that, and the rest of this list will carry you through everything the biome throws at you, right up to the moment you’re standing in front of Kall with a plain Nord Sword in hand.

Happy raiding!
