The Best Project Zomboid Vehicle Mods for Multiplayer Servers

Walking is fine for the first in-game week. After that, Muldraugh starts to feel small, your group is scattered across three different safehouses, and a supply run to the West Point gun store turns into a twenty-minute hike each way with a horde on your heels the whole time. A car fixes that instantly, and it’s part of why vanilla vehicles were one of the most requested features in this game’s history long before they actually shipped.

The vanilla car roster is solid but limited. It covers the basics: a few sedans, a pickup, a van, a couple of military trucks if you know where to look. The moment your group wants variety, or a dedicated RV to live out of, or something with enough armor plating to survive a horde ram, you’re looking at the Workshop. And on a server specifically, vehicle mods come with a wrinkle solo players don’t have to think about: everyone connecting needs the same mod, at the same version, or nobody’s driving anywhere.

We picked five vehicle mods worth running on a Project Zomboid server, plus one bonus pick for anyone who wants more cars than they’ll ever actually need. All six are checked against their current Steam Workshop pages, not just their descriptions, since Build 42 only went stable a couple of weeks ago, and a lot of mod pages are still catching up.

When Vehicle Mods Actually Showed Up in Project Zomboid

Project Zomboid has had community mods since close to the start, but sharing them used to mean digging through forum threads and manually dropping files into a mods folder. That changed in August 2015, when Build 32.20 wired Steam Workshop directly into the game’s Java framework. Suddenly subscribing to a mod was a button click instead of a small research project, and the number of available mods took off from there.

Build 41 is the version most current players still remember as “the multiplayer one.” It hit public beta in October 2019 and went stable in December 2021, rebuilding the game’s networking and animation systems from the ground up. Good news for the game, less good news for mod authors, since anything built around vehicles now had to sync position, damage, and passenger state across a network connection that worked completely differently than before. A lot of older vehicle mods either got rewritten for Build 41 or quietly died on the vine.

Build 42 is the current chapter, and it’s a recent one. It entered public beta in December 2024 and only became the stable branch on July 29, 2026, less than three weeks before this blog. That’s why almost every mod on this list is tagged “B41/B42” or has a separate B42-specific version: the whole vehicle modding scene is mid-migration right now. Native vehicle animations, a proper item registry, and a built-in mod manager all landed with Build 42, and some big, beloved mods (we’ll get to one in particular) are still working through what that means for their old code.

What to Look For in a Vehicle Mod for a Multiplayer Server

Picking a vehicle mod for four friends is a much shorter checklist than picking one for a public server with mods you don’t control. Here’s what actually matters.

The must-haves:

Confirmed multiplayer support, not just an assumption. Some mod authors say it outright in a FAQ; others just don’t mention singleplayer or multiplayer at all, which usually means it hasn’t been tested properly on a server. Every mod that made this list states its MP status directly on the Workshop page.

Everyone on the same version. Vehicle mods live or die on file matching. If your server updates a mod and half your players haven’t restarted Steam yet, you’ll get the classic “file doesn’t match the one on the server” error and nobody can log in until it’s sorted out.

Clear dependencies. A vehicle pack that needs a shared library mod, a paint mod, or a specific upgrade framework isn’t a problem by itself, but it needs to say so on the page. Subscribing to a car pack only to find out it does nothing without three other mods is an annoying way to lose an evening.

Recent updates, especially right now. With Build 42 only weeks old as a stable branch, a mod last touched in 2023 is a real risk. Check the “Updated” date on the Workshop page itself rather than trusting the mod’s title tags, since those don’t always get changed the same day the code does.

Nice to have:

Spawn customization. Being able to dial down how often rare or expensive vehicles show up matters more on a server where twenty players are all looking for the same sports car.

Safe to add mid-save. Not every mod supports this, and the ones that do usually say so explicitly. It matters if your server already has a few weeks of playtime on it and you don’t want to start over.

An active comment section. Not for entertainment value, though it often has some, but because it tells you how fast the author responds when something breaks after a game update.

1. Motorious Zone Vehicle Pack

Motorious Zone Vehicle Pack

fhqwhgads has been building this pack since 2022, and it’s earned its spot as the closest thing to a default recommendation for Project Zomboid vehicles. It adds a wide spread of vanilla-styled cars, from everyday sedans and vans up to genuinely rare exotics like a Lancia Stratos or a GT40, and every vehicle stays true to the game’s pre-1993 setting instead of feeling like it wandered in from a different decade.

What sets it apart is how much control you get over what actually spawns. Three optional Spawn Selection submods split the roster into US Motors, Imports, and Rares and Exotics, so a server can allow everyday trucks while keeping the six-figure sports cars appropriately rare. The mod’s own FAQ confirms multiplayer compatibility directly, and it’s built to play nicely alongside other vehicle packs rather than fight with them. The author has even said Motorious was designed with Filibuster Rhymes’ Used Cars in mind, tuning spawn rarity so the two don’t step on each other.

Pros:

  • Wide variety without feeling like a random grab bag of unrelated cars
  • Three-tier spawn control for servers that want to manage rarity
  • Confirmed and actively discussed multiplayer support
  • Actively maintained, with an update as recent as August 11.
  • Over 627,000 subscribers and a genuinely responsive author in the comments
  • Can be added mid-save, though vehicles only spawn in unexplored areas

Cons:

  • No sandbox-level toggle for individual cars yet, only the three broad categories
  • Adding it to an already fully explored map means pairing it with a respawn mod to actually find the new vehicles
  • A translation quirk means vehicle key names sometimes show up mismatched in multiplayer

2. Campers!

Campers! mod workshop

KI5 has built a reputation for polished, MP-first vehicle mods, and Campers! leans into a niche nobody else on this list really covers: living out of your vehicle. It adds four camper trailers with fully animated doors and slide-outs, removable furniture and appliances you can place in the world, and support for two different wheel setups depending on how rugged you want the build.

The mod requires KI5’s shared “that DAMN Library” framework, which powers crafting, fixing, and recycling across all of the author’s mods. That’s a small extra step during setup, but it means updates roll out consistently instead of each mod reinventing its own systems. Compatibility is spelled out clearly on the page: full singleplayer and multiplayer support from Build 42.13 onward, with the earlier Build 41 release also fully supported.

Pros:

  • A genuinely unique pickup for roleplay-focused or nomadic-style servers
  • Fully animated parts, including removable furniture you can actually use
  • Clearly documented MP support across both B41 and B42
  • Actively updated, with the author treating it as a serious, ongoing project
  • Can be added to an existing save without issue

Cons:

  • Needs the shared library mod installed alongside it, one more dependency to track
  • Fixed set of four trailers, no spawn customization to speak of “On lockdown” licensing means nobody but the original author can modify or repack it

3. U.S. M998 Humvee

U.S. M998 Humvee workshop mod

Most vehicle mods focus on variety. Papa_Chad’s Humvee focuses on one thing and does it properly: a genuinely functional turret. The mod adds an M998 HMMWV with animated doors, a hood and trunk that open independently, and interchangeable parts you can mix and match by color. The turret itself runs on an independent ballistics system that calculates each fired round’s energy and impact separately, rather than leaning on the game’s standard combat math.

It requires the separate Military Tool Kit mod to function, and the page states plainly that it’s built for Build 42 only, in both singleplayer and multiplayer, with compatibility for older saves and for KI5’s vehicle lineup. If your server leans PvP, or you just want one over-the-top vehicle for a military-themed roleplay setup, this is the pick.

Pros:

  • A working, independently-calculated turret system, rare among vehicle mods
  • Animated doors, hood, and trunk with mixable color parts
  • Explicit B42 singleplayer and multiplayer support
  • Compatible with old saves and KI5’s other vehicle mods

Cons:

  • Single vehicle, so it’s an addition rather than a car pack replacement
  • Requires the Military Tool Kit dependency to work at all
  • A few reports of frame drops when opening the vehicle’s part menu on hosted servers

4. Filibuster Rhymes’ Used Cars!

Filibuster Rhymes' Used Cars! workshop mod

This is the mod most Project Zomboid players have heard of even if they’ve never played modded, and the subscriber count backs that up: just under 2 million. It adds somewhere between 80 and 90 vehicles once you count variants, spanning sedans, taxis, off-road trucks, and a couple of oddities like a propane tanker, all with an option to toggle between lore-friendly and real-world car names.

Here’s the honest part. The main Workshop page hasn’t been updated since April 1, 2022. Filibuster Rhymes has been rebuilding the mod with full animations and interiors for well over a year now, and by his own posts, the finished version is close but not out yet, with the original page explicitly on hold until Build 42’s stable release. That release happened weeks ago, so an update may not be far off, but as of right now the classic version is technically a Build 41 mod. If you want this car pack running on Build 42 today, look for the community-maintained “Certified Used Cars” port instead, which brings over roughly 53 cars and 6 trailers with synced door and window animations while crediting the original creator.

Pros:

  • Enormous variety for a single mod, closing in on 90 vehicles and variants
  • Nearly 2 million subscribers, about as battle-tested as a mod gets
  • Real-name and lore-friendly naming options for servers with different preferences
  • A dedicated, actively maintained community B42 port exists in the meantime

Cons:

  • The original mod is stalled on Build 41 as of this writing
  • No official word yet on exactly when the long-promised animated rebuild ships
  • Depending on a community port means checking that it stays maintained too

5. More Car Features + Spawn Zones Expansion

More Car Features + Spawn Zones Expansion workshop mod

GamestaMechanic’s mod doesn’t add a single new vehicle, and that’s kind of the point. It’s a quality-of-life and realism overhaul for every car already in your game, vanilla or modded. Thousands of new spawn zones spread vehicles more sensibly across garages, farms, and traffic jams, junk cars show up genuinely stripped and damaged instead of always pristine, and fuel pumps get an overhaul that includes mobile refueling. There’s also a lengthy list of smaller touches: car alarms, bombs you can plant or throw, weather effects on vehicles left with the doors open, and the ability to climb onto a car’s roof for a better vantage point.

The author describes it as the “Common Sense” mod for vehicles, and after checking the changelog, that tracks. One update alone logged over 1,400 individual vehicle spawn zone adjustments across the map. It’s tagged as a work in progress built for both singleplayer and multiplayer on the current Build 42.20 stable branch, supports every modded vehicle already on your server, and can be safely added or removed mid-save.

Pros:

  • Deep realism and immersion upgrades without adding heavy new models
  • Tiny footprint since it’s almost entirely logic rather than assets
  • Actively and frequently updated, often multiple times a week
  • Nearly every feature can be toggled individually
  • Safe to add or remove from an existing save

Cons:

  • Climbable vehicles specifically don’t work in multiplayer yet, and the author flags this directly
  • As a WIP mod, expect the occasional small bug between updates
  • Doesn’t add a single car on its own, so it’s a companion to a car pack rather than a replacement for one

Bonus: PZK VLC (Vanilla Look-like Car Pack)

PZK VLC mod workshop

If the other picks feel like tasting menus, PZK VLC is the whole restaurant. PeterHammerman’s pack bills itself as one of the biggest car packs on Steam Workshop for this game, and checking the current page backs that up: more than 440 car and skin variations, all modeled to blend into the game’s existing vanilla art style rather than looking like a mismatched import.

Running it properly means installing a small stack of supporting mods too: Tsar’s Common Library, both the core and vanilla components of Standardized Vehicle Upgrades 3, and the HDCP Immersive Vehicle Paint mod if you want repainting to work. Worth knowing going in, the wider PZK mod family has occasionally paused development to work through specific technical issues (a rendering bug affecting how buildings block player view was one recent example), so don’t be surprised if an add-on pack shows “paused” while the core VLC mod itself keeps getting updated, as it was again as recently as late April.

Pros:

  • The largest single source of vanilla-styled vehicle variety available
  • Actively maintained core mod, with the most recent update in April
  • Genuinely built to blend with the vanilla art direction instead of clashing with it
  • A dedicated fan wiki if you need help identifying or locating specific cars

Cons:

  • Requires several additional library mods to function properly, more setup than most packs on this list
  • Sizeable download at roughly 361 MB before you count the dependencies
  • “On lockdown” licensing, and some optional add-on packs pause development periodically over unresolved bugs

Which One Should You Choose?

It depends on what your server is actually for, more than anything else.

For a small private server with a handful of friends, Motorious Zone is the easiest starting point precisely because of its spawn tiers. You can let the everyday cars flow freely and keep the exotics genuinely rare, which matters more when there are only four or five of you competing for loot instead of thirty. Layer in Campers! if anyone wants a mobile base, and you’ve got a setup that covers most of what a casual group wants without demanding a huge download.

For a public or PvP-leaning server, the Humvee earns its keep. A functional turret changes how fights against other players or big hordes actually play out, and pairing it with More Car Features gives you the alarm and car-bomb tools that make vehicle combat feel intentional rather than accidental. Keep an eye on performance if you’re also running a heavy car pack alongside it, since public servers tend to have more concurrent players stressing the same systems.

For a roleplay or immersion-focused server, Campers! is close to mandatory if anyone in your group wants to actually live out of a vehicle, and PZK VLC or the Used Cars community port give you enough visual variety that not every car on the map looks the same. More Car Features rounds it out with the small realism touches, like weather affecting an open car door, that roleplay groups tend to notice and appreciate.

For a server on weaker hardware, skip the massive packs entirely. More Car Features is only a couple of megabytes since it’s pure logic, and the Humvee adds just one vehicle rather than hundreds of new models to load. You can always add a bigger variety pack later once you know your server can handle the extra load without stuttering during a horde event.

If you genuinely can’t decide, the pairing showing up in the most collections right now is Motorious Zone for variety and More Car Features for everything else. It’s not flashy, but it’s the version of “everyone gets a decent car” that causes the fewest headaches on a server with mods you don’t fully control.

Vehicles change what a Project Zomboid server actually feels like to play on. A group scattered across separate safehouses becomes a group that can actually coordinate a supply run, and a mod that’s clearly documented for multiplayer, kept current for whichever build you’re running, and honest about what it needs installed alongside it will save you a lot more headaches than one with flashier screenshots and a vaguer description.

If you’re setting any of these up on a dedicated server, Cybrancee‘s Project Zomboid Hosting comes with unlimited slots, storage, and bandwidth on every plan, along with the RAM headroom a modded vehicle-heavy world actually needs.

Happy driving!
