Minecraft Java Edition 26.3, Wilderness Bound, went live on September 15, 2026. It is the third game drop of the year, and it is built around one biome and what you find in it: red, orange and yellow poplar trees, leaf litter, abandoned camps, a block you can finally sit on, and a bed that only works once.
The update is out now, Bedrock got its own version (26.50) the same day, and one default server setting changed that can lock players out if you don’t check it first.
Ten Snapshots Later
Mojang announced the drop at Minecraft Live in May 2026 as the third game drop of the year. The Wilderness Bound name didn’t come out until September 5, at the MC Championship: Fall Stars event, ten days before release. Bedrock players who opted into Preview builds saw most of it early, since the experimental features shipped in Bedrock 26.40.
On the Java side, the drop spent about three months in testing: ten snapshots, three pre-releases and three release candidates. The biome is the centerpiece, and camping and exploration are the theme. Most of the smaller additions, like the beds, cushions and maps, fit around that. The launch trailer shows the same idea. Three players build a cabin in an amber forest, get surrounded by creepers, and scare them off with a tuxedo cat.
What Actually Shipped
One new biome, a full wood set, a new structure, a sitting block, a single-use bed, and stairs and slabs for every wool and concrete color. A few technical changes came along underneath.

The Dappled Forest. An autumn biome that generates near cold biomes. Its trees are poplars, and each one picks red, orange or yellow leaves when it generates, with falling leaf particles in the same color. The floor is covered in leaf litter, with red shrubs, brown mushrooms, shelf mushrooms and the occasional spruce mixed in. Fallen poplar trees show up here more often than fallen trees do elsewhere. Sheep, chickens, cows, pigs, rabbits and foxes spawn in it.
Poplar wood. Poplar gets the full set: planks, stairs, slabs, doors, trapdoors, fences, fence gates, signs, hanging signs, buttons, pressure plates, a shelf and both boat types. Poplar saplings grow into any of the three leaf colors at random, so planting one is a small gamble. A wandering trader can sell saplings and logs, and you can smelt poplar leaves into leaf litter if you want ground cover without waiting for it to drop.
Red shrubs and shelf mushrooms. Bone meal on a red shrub tries to spread another one to a neighboring block. Shelf mushrooms grow on poplar trees, come in two sizes, and bounce you like a bed when you land on them. Bone meal turns a small one into a large one, and breaking a large one gives you two mushrooms back. You can also cook with them in mushroom stew, suspicious stew and rabbit stew.

Abandoned Camps. A new structure built around an empty tent and a campfire, with chests and barrels inside. It generates in 18 different biomes, and each biome gets its own variant. Most tents are built from wool stairs, and around them you might find a stone shelter, a pond, straw beds, cushions, a small crop farm, a lone tree, or overgrown leaves and cobwebs. The common chests hold early-game loot like copper gear, buckets, compasses, maps and gunpowder. Each camp also has a hidden secret chest with a chance at iron gear, gold, potions and diamonds.
Explorer Maps. Every map type is now its own item with its own icon, so you can tell at a glance where each one points. Camps can drop maps that point to other camps, and there are versions for Bamboo Jungle, Cherry Grove, Birch Forest, Dappled Forest, Flower Forest, Pale Garden, Swamp and Windswept Forest. The secret chests can also hold maps to Ancient Cities, Mineshafts, Desert Pyramids and Warm Ocean Ruins. The player marker now shows rotation even when you walk past the edge of a map. One catch: only maps in the extendable maps tag can be zoomed out, so explorer maps stay at the zoom level they came with.
Cushions. Mojang’s answer to sitting down. Craft one from a matching wool slab, place it on any flat surface, and interact with it to sit. There are 16 colors, and they stack to 16. Cushions have no collision and can’t be moved, and they break if the block under them is removed.

Straw Beds. Four straw beds come from three hay bales. A straw bed lets you sleep through the night without resetting your spawn point, and it is destroyed after one use (it also breaks if you click “Get up” mid-sleep). It doesn’t work in the Nether or the End, and villagers won’t use it. If you explore far from home, this is the most useful item in the update.
Wool and concrete stairs and slabs. Both come in all 16 colors. Concrete versions can be crafted or cut in a stonecutter, which is the cheaper route. The wool ones dampen sound the way wool blocks and carpets do, and wool slabs are the ingredient for cushions.
Realms and everything else. Realm owners can now create up to five invite codes per Realm. Each code can be switched on or off and given its own expiry date, and friends enter it on a new Join Realm screen instead of waiting for a direct invite. Spectators can now travel through Nether and End portals. Gothic joined the language list, and on Linux the game now prefers Wayland when it’s available. The main menu panorama shows the Dappled Forest with an abandoned camp in it.

The small stuff. The hay bale texture was updated so the strap lines up with the straw bed. Spruce leaves no longer drop falling leaf particles, while poplar leaves drop their own colored ones, at the same rate as pale oak and cherry. Poplar leaves attached to a log also make ambient sounds when enough matching leaves surround them.
In practice the pieces fit together well. You find a camp, loot the chests, follow the map inside to the next camp, and sleep in a straw bed when night falls. A cushion by the campfire is optional, but it’s the first time Minecraft has let you do it without crouching on a stair.
Single-sentence version: Mojang built a biome and gave you reasons to go camping in it.
Under the Hood
Minecraft now uses SDL3 instead of GLFW for windowing, input and platform integration. Keyboard input uses SDL scancodes for physical key positions and SDL keycodes for layout-dependent text shortcuts, which is why some key binding behavior changed, especially on Mac.
The data pack format is now 121.0 and the resource pack format is 97.1. The minimum Java version is Java 25. Two new commands landed for data pack authors: /posteffect applies shaders from resource packs to a player’s screen, and /compute evaluates integer and float providers in a command context.
Not Everything Is Smooth
Old packs need updating. Anything built for 26.2 has to move to the new pack formats, so data pack authors have some work ahead of them.
Mod support is uneven. Some major mods already list 26.3 support, JEI among them. The SDL3 switch and the registry changes could still break lower-level mods, so check your own list before you update.
Server admins should look at one setting first. The update changes the default whitelist to on. If your server never had a whitelist configured, updating can lock out everyone who hasn’t been added by hand. The fix is short: set white-list to false in server.properties if you want an open server.
Existing worlds are fine, but the new content won’t appear everywhere. New biomes and structures only generate in freshly loaded chunks, so the Dappled Forest won’t overwrite terrain you’ve already explored. Walk into unexplored territory or start a new world to find it.
Some players say the Dappled Forest still generates in small pockets, which makes it hard to find at first. Others miss terracotta stairs and slabs, which didn’t make this drop. Cushions are entities rather than blocks, so a room packed with hundreds of them can cost you frames.

26.3 By Player Type
You build a lot: This one is for you. Wool and concrete stairs and slabs in 16 colors, plus a full poplar set, fill a gap builders have asked about for years.
You explore and survive: Straw beds and explorer maps change how long trips work. Pack a few beds, follow the camp maps, and check the secret chests.
You run a server: Check your whitelist setting before you update, and confirm your plugins support 26.3.
You play on Realms: Invite codes make it easier to bring people in, with up to five per Realm and an expiry date on each.
You use mods or data packs: Wait for your key mods to update, then bump your pack formats. Back up your world first.
You play on Bedrock: You got Wilderness Bound the same day, as version 26.50, on Xbox Series X and S, PC, Game Pass, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5.
You want to check it installed: Java should read 26.3 and Bedrock should read 26.50. Search the creative inventory for poplar, and if it shows up, you have the drop.
You just want the biome: Head toward cold biomes and look for orange grass and falling leaves.
Summary
Minecraft Java Edition 26.3, Wilderness Bound, launched on September 15, 2026, with Bedrock 26.50 arriving the same day. Mojang announced it at Minecraft Live in May and revealed the name on September 5.
The update adds the Dappled Forest biome, poplar trees in red, orange and yellow, a full poplar wood set, red shrubs, shelf mushrooms, and Abandoned Camps that generate in 18 biomes. It also adds new Explorer Maps, 16-color Cushions, one-use Straw Beds, and wool and concrete stairs and slabs in every color. Spectators can use portals, Realms has invite codes, and Linux prefers Wayland.
Under the hood, the game moved to SDL3, and the data pack and resource pack formats are now 121.0 and 97.1. The whitelist now defaults to on, older packs need updating, and the new content only appears in chunks that haven’t generated yet.
Players like the new blocks and camps. The complaints are small biome pockets, missing terracotta stairs and slabs, and waiting on mods.
