How to Improve the Performance of Your Minecraft Server

We want all of our customers to have a flawless experience on Cybrancee, and having a performance issue on your server is going to affect that experience.

In almost all cases of performance issues, there is something that can be done to resolve it. And of course, if none of this helps, our technical support team are always available to help you.

It is first important to explore what the different types of performance issues are. The most common types of performance issues can be:

  • Network lag (can result in rubber banding, packet loss, actions being undone / not recognised)

  • Server lag (server not recognising actions, chunks not loading, being stuck in a void, unable to open chests or interact with items, being kicked from server)

Reduce network lag:

1. One of the biggest causes for network lag is simply your geographic location in relation to the Minecraft server. If you have a server in Europe, but you are connecting from America, you will be more likely to experience network lag than if you were connecting to a server in our NA West/East datacenters.

If you find that your server is not in the closest region to you, drop a quick ticket to our support team via your client area and we can transfer your server for you. You will not lose your world saves during this process, however your IP address will be different, as well as your port.

2. VPNs. If you are using a VPN, it is highly recommended to disconnect whilst playing on our servers. This is because VPNs drastically reduce your network speed to our datacenters and will cause network induced lag.

3. Stop other downloads. If you have other applications running in the background which are installing games (such as Steam, Epic Games etc), these will be eating up huge amounts of your available bandwidth. Your should stop or pause these downloads whilst playing Minecraft.

    Reduce server lag:

    1. Enable the garbage collection option. Via your Cybrancee panel, you can access a setting within the Startup Page to turn on the experimental garbage collection. This will make various modifications to Minecraft to help reduce the RAM usage – this can significantly improve server speed where a RAM limit is being reached. Some modpacks have reduced by 6GB of RAM usage!

You can follow our guide here: https://cybrancee.com/learn/knowledge-base/how-to-reduce-ram-usage-on-your-minecraft-server/

    2. Install performance mods/plugins. Whilst mods and plugins are often the reason for poorly performing servers, you can find some mods/plugins which have a sole purpose of simply improving the stability and performance of Minecraft servers. You can use our modpack/plugin installers to find suitable options – or you can upload them yourself via the File Manager.

    3. Reduce the server view distance. It is sometimes tempting to increase the view distance to higher numbers, however this usually brings very little benefit, and a lot of problems. Increasing your view distance drastically increases the amount of processing that your server needs to do. As a result, this will eat up more server resources and result in server lag. A view distance of 10 or less is usually the best option.
