How To Enable/Disable Steam Relay on a Project Zomboid Server

In this article, we will explain how to enable Steam Relay, which is an option that acts as a bridge in the connection between your PC and the server.

Enabling Steam Relay helps improve security by hiding your IP address, as well as optimising the data route by using Steam’s private network, which can help reduce ping and connection drops.

1. Open Project Zomboid

2. Select ‘Multiplayer’

3. Select ‘Edit’ for the Server You Want To Join

4. Check the ‘Use Steam Relay’ Box

Then, save the changes.

5. Join the Server

If you have enabled Steam Relay, you will see a warning message about closed port. This warning message is normal and means that Steam Relay is enabled (using Steam’s default port which is always closed for security reasons).
