How To Safely Remove a Mod From a DayZ Server

Removing a mod from a DayZ server can cause crashes or corrupted data if done incorrectly. Mod removal must be handled carefully, especially on servers with persistence enabled.

1. Log In to Your Panel

2. Stop Your Server

3. Identify the Mod Type (Critical Step)

Before removing anything, determine what the mod does.

Mods that are usually safe to remove (with caution)

  • UI mods
  • Admin tools (e.g. VPPAdminTools)
  • Map markers
  • Chat or QoL mods
  • Cosmetic-only mods

Mods that are NOT safe to remove without a wipe

  • Mods that add items or weapons
  • Vehicle mods
  • Storage or inventory mods
  • AI mods
  • Base-building mods
  • Economy-altering mods

If a mod adds persistent objects, removing it will leave broken references in the server database.

4. Remove the Mod from the Startup Parameters

4.1. Select the ‘Startup’ Tab

5. Remove the Mod Files (optional but recommended)

In the server files:

  • Delete the mod folder from: home / container
  • Remove any mod-specific config folders (if present)

Do not delete shared dependencies like CF unless no other mods use them.

6. Clear Mod-Related Persistence (if applicable)

This step depends on the mod.

Safe options (recommended)

  • Perform a full persistence wipe
  • Or restore a backup from before the mod was installed

Advanced (not recommended for most users)

Manually editing:

  • storage_1
  • types.xml
  • events.xml
  • cfgeventspawns.xml

Manual cleanup is error-prone and can easily break the server.

7. Start the Server and Monitor Logs

Watch the Console For:

  • Missing class errors
  • Unknown entity warnings
  • Database load failures

If errors appear, stop immediately and restore your backup
