How to Set Up and Use RCON (Admin Commands) in Left 4 Dead 2

1. Log In to Your Panel


2. Select the ‘Files’ Tab

5. Select the ‘server.cfg‘ File

6. Enter Your Secure Password

Scroll through the file until you find the line that says rcon_password. Change the text inside the quotation marks to your desired admin password.

(Example: rcon_password "MySecretAdmin"). Always keep the quotation marks!

7. Save the File


8. Restart Your Server


9. Join Your Server In-Game


10. Open the Developer Console

Once you load into the map, press the ~ (tilde) key on your keyboard to drop down the command console.


11. Log In as Admin

Type rcon_password followed by a space, and then type the exact password you set in Step 6.

(Example: rcon_password MySecretAdmin). You will not get a confirmation message, but the server now recognizes you

12. Running an RCON Command

To tell the server you want to do an admin action, you must type rcon first. Try typing rcon status and pressing Enter. If it prints out a list of player stats and server info, you are officially logged in

13. Essential Left 4 Dead 2 RCON Commands

rcon changelevel [map_name]Instantly changes the map.
(Example: rcon changelevelc1m1_hotel loads Dead Center).
rcon kick [Player Name]Removes a player from the server.
rcon banid [Minutes] [SteamID]Bans a player. Use 0 for a permanent ban,
rcon quitSafely shuts down and restarts the server.
