How to fix ‘Unknown host’ Error in Minecraft

‘Unknown host’ Error. What is it?

The ‘Unknown host’ error in Minecraft occurs when Minecraft cannot find a running Minecraft server on the specified IP and port.

1. Is Your Server Switched On?

To turn on your server, press the green button in your control panel.

2. Did You Enter the Server IP/Port Correctly?

Make sure you have entered your server IP correctly in the following format: ip.ip.ip.ip:port.

3. Is Your Server and Client on the Same Version?

On some older versions of Minecraft, the server will respond ‘Unknown host’ if the client is on a different Minecraft version than the server. To check your server version, see How to Join Your Vanilla Minecraft Server.
